THE WRITTEN REPORT

⚫ THE WRITTEN REPORT SHOULD BE COMPLETED
AS A GROUP.
⚫ It should be based on the theme of the group.
⚫ Create two questions that all members of the group
would want answered about the theme?

OUTCOMES OF THE RESEARCH

❖ INCLUDE MATERIALS SELECTED, REASONS FOR


SELECTION AND ANALYSIS OF THE MATERIAL

❖ SHOULD BE 250-300 WORDS


BEFORE YOU WRITE:
⚫ 1. DECIDE ON THE GROUP RESEARCH QUESTIONS

⚫ 2. SELECT YOUR GROUP PIECES (use the APA format


for recording sources in a reference list to record your
three pieces
⚫ 3. ANALYZE THE INDIVIDUAL PIECES ( use text
analysis here)
Text Analysis Strategies
⚫ 1. Answer each question:
⚫ A. What analysis technique/ strategies can you use to
analyze each piece?
⚫ B. What is the main idea in each piece?
⚫ C. How is each piece relevant to my questions?
⚫ D. What parts support my suggested answers?
⚫ E. What parts do not support my answers?
⚫ F. What new questions are raised?
⚫ G. How does each piece change what I previously knew
about the topic?

2. SOAPSTONES
⚫ Speaker Who is the speaker? What do we know about the speaker’s personality ( age, gender,
dominant beliefs, culture?)

⚫ Occasion What is the occasion? Where is the author living? What was going on in the location/
country that made the writer write this piece?

⚫ Audience What is the intended audience? What specific group of people does the author hope

to reach?

⚫ Purpose What is the purpose? The reason the source was created ( PIE); Why does the author
want this group to read this? What does the writer want you to think and feel after reading

the text?
⚫ Subject What is the subject? (Topic/ theme/ issue being addressed) What does
the writer want you to think and feel after reading the text?

⚫ TONE What is the tone? ( the manner in which the topic/ theme/ issue being
presented) what does the writer think and feel about the subject? What is the writer’s
attitude towards the subject?

⚫ Style What is the author’s style? How is the piece organized? How does the
author write? What kinds of language/ literary techniques are used? What does the
writer want you to think and feel after reading the text?
SYNTHESIZE THE PIECES
⚫ Now that you have analyzed each piece, you should
be better able to put tem together to write your written
report effectively and efficiently.
⚫ Answer 3 questions:
⚫ 1. What are the similarities between and among
the pieces?
⚫ 2. What are the differences between and among
the pieces?
⚫ What are the answers to my questions as found in
each piece?
