The Copa America is a tournament held by the South American Football ruling body CONMEBOL. Teams who are involved include some of football's most talented squads
such as Brazil, Argentina and Chile
What is Copa América? Copa América is the oldest international football tournament in the world and the main competition for national teams in South America. The
competition determines the champion team of South America, however, since the 1990s teams from Asia and North America have also been invited to participate. Since it's
inception, Uruguay has the most championships with 15 cups, while Brazil are the current champions and have the second-most championship wins with 9 cups.
Copa América 2024 was due to have Australia and Qatar national teams competing alongside the ten South American teams - however, this competition had now
been postponed until 2024 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
When is Copa América? The competition is held over a month-long period in the Summer. Copa América 2024 was due to begin June 12th, with the final scheduled for July
12th. It will now take place in the Summer of 2024.
When did Copa América start? The first tournament was held in 1916, and since then, eight of the ten South American teams have held at least one title - with only Ecuador
and Venezuela yet to win. It started as a 100th-anniversary celebration of Argentina's independence.
Did You Know..? Until 1975, Copa América was instead called the South American Football Championship.
How is Copa América played? There are two phases played: the group stage followed by the knockout stage. In the group stage, teams compete within three groups of four.
Each group plays a round-robin tournament, in which each team is scheduled for three matches against other teams in the same group. The top two teams from each group
and then moved into the knockout stage as well as the two best third-place teams. Points are used to rank the teams within a group.
The knockout stage is a single-elimination tournament in which teams play each other in one-off matches, with penalty shootouts or extra time used to decide the winner if
a match is still tied after 90 minutes. It begins with the quarter-finals, then semi-finals, the third-place match, and the final.+
