Carnation Experiment
Show the boys and girls a white carnation. Have
the boys and girls identify the parts. Then, ask
them what will happen when you place the flower
in water. If they tell you it will change color ask
them how the color will get to the flower petals.
There are two different forms, one for younger
students (or for a quick review) and one for
older. Students will first fill out their prediction.
They can show what will happen on the carnation
and write about it. The second form, they will
show what actually happened and tell (in their
opinion) the job of the stem. Clarify this by
telling the boys and girls that the stem is like a
straw and will suck up the water and nutrients
and supply it to the leaves and flowers.

Read the paragraph. Answer the questions.

Plants are living things that

grow on land and water. Plants
need soil, water, air and sunlight
to live. The four main parts of
a plant are the roots, stem,
leaves and flowers. We eat
plants. Some plants that we eat
are lettuce, carrots and beans.

Life Cycle of a Plant
Place the life cycle of a plant on the board and
ask students if they know what a life cycle is. I
like to demonstrate this using seeds and fake
flowers. Show the boys and girls the “Life Cycle
Anchor Chart.”
To review, place the lifecycle cards on the
board/flannel board. Have students help
recreate the chart. Then have the boys and girls
label the parts or complete one of the life cycle
craft.
