Objective: To provide a written procedure to render immediate First Aid during normal or
emergency situations

2. Scope: This procedure is applicable to render first aid during emergency situations.

3. Responsibility: Excecutive Human Resources

4. Accountability: Plant Manager

5. Procedure

5.1 REST ROOM :


5.1.1 The first aid box is equipped with all the necessary items required for First Aid.
5. 1.2 Any injured person shall be immediately shifted to the rest room for First Aid.

5.2 FOR CUTS AND WOUNDS:


5.2.1 Try to stop bleeding at first instance by application of ice. Do not press the bleeding part very
strongly.
5.2.2 Cover the wound with clean cloth / sterile gauze, and apply gentle pressure.
5.2.3 If a body part is severely wounded, send the victim to the hospital along with an escort.

5.3 FOR BURNS:


Note : Never use iodine, cotton, oil or greasy ointment.
5.3.1 For surface burns of minor nature, submerge the part in ice cold water. Cover lightly with sterile
dry dressing.
5.3.2 For 2nd degree burns showing blisters and severe pain, cut away clothing. Immerse the burnt part
of the body in ice cold water. Apply clean wet dressing and cover with sterile cloth. Take the victim to
nearby hospital immediately.
5.3.3 For 3rd degree burns where skin is charred or destroyed ( showing White of the skin), cover with
clean thick moist cloth. Elevate burnt Part of the body if possible. Transfer the victim to a hospital
immediately.
5.4 FOR BROKEN BONES (FRACTURE):
5.4.1 Don’t move victim, particularly when injury to neck or spinal chord is suspected.
5.4.2 Put limb in a comfortable position.
5.4.3 Hold head between hands so that neck does not bend forward or to either side.
5.4.4 Carry the patient in straight position.
5.4.5 Do not allow weight bearing of any kind.
5.4.6 Allow the victim sit in a posture comfortable for him.
5.4.7 Support the broken bones with a ‘Splint’ (rolled newspaper, board, Anything rigid) Pad the splint with
rags, cloth or any soft material. Tie firmly in place to keep broken part from moving.
5.4.8 Shift the victim to the hospital for further treatment.
5.4.9 NOTE: Do not try to push protruding bones into place. Call for a doctor urgently or shift the injured
person to the hospital.

5.5 POISONING:
5.5.1 Immediately give large amount of water to dilute poison if consumed by mouth and call for a Doctor
5.5.2 Induce vomiting, unless the victim has swallowed corrosive poison.
5.5.3 If victim has swallowed strong acids or alkalis or petroleum based products, give fluids (water ) to
dilute the materials.
5.5.4 If acid is swallowed, give baking soda in water. Discontinue if nausea occurs.
5.5.5 In case of gas poisoning, transfer the victim into fresh air surroundings immediately. If breathing is
stopped or irregular, give artificial respiration. Call for oxygen equipment and arrange for a vehicle for
taking the victim to hospital.

5.6 ELECTRIC SHOCK:


5.6.1 Switch off main switch or push victim off electric wire with dry non-conducting material like wood
while standing on dry board or a rubber mat.
5.6.2 NOTE: Do not touch victim of electric shock until contact with the source of current is broken.
5.6.3 Keep victim lying down and cover him with a blanket. If breathing stops, give artificial respiration.
5.6.4 Call for Oxygen equipment, and arrange for vehicle for taking the victim to hospital.

5.7 EYE INJURIES:


5.7.1
Chemical in eye : Flush with clean cold water immediately for about 15 minutes. Separate eye lids and allow
large amount of water to pour over the affected eye to wash away chemical irritant.
5.7.2 Cover both eyes with clean gauze / bandage and rush the victim to doctor.
5.7.3 Object in eye : Speck may be removed by natural flow of tears or warm water instilled into a corner of
the eye with a medicine dropper.
5.7.4 Don’t rub and do not touch immovable specks on eyeball. Cover both eyes with light bandage and take
the victim to a doctor.

5.8 FIRST AID BOX:


5.8.1 Always keep First Aid Box equipped with required quantities of desired medicines and related items
mentioned below. i.e.
Cotton,
Gauze,
Burzine
Bandaid,
Iodine Tincture
Adhesive tape
Scissor
Dettol/ Savlon
5.8.2 Display the list of items on the box.
5.8.3 Keep one box in each department at position easily accessible.
5.8.4 Check the contents periodically and replenish the exhausted stock.
