Psychology

Psychology as a discipline
Psychology is a discipline that studies human behavior,
mental processes, and experiences in different contexts.
It makes us understand how our mind works and how
certain cognitive processes result in a specific type of
behavior.
A main concern about psychology as a discipline is the
potential for it to be used to manipulate people.
However, psychology does not aim to manipulate people
but seeks to understand and explain human behavior.
Psychology as a natural science
Psychology as a natural science largely focuses on
biological principles to explain human behavior. It
assumes that all behavioral phenomena have causes that
can be discovered if we can collect data systematically
under controlled conditions.
Psychology connects to natural sciences by exploring
biological explanations for human behavior and is
different from other social sciences by studying societal
influences on individual and group behaviors and
biological aspects. However, it doesn't claim that human
behavior is only a result of biology.
Psychology as a social science
Psychology is considered a social science because of its
emphasis on the social nature of human behavior. This is
why psychologists are interested in understanding the
role that culture plays in shaping our thoughts,
emotions, and behaviors.
Psychology as a Social Science focuses on how
behavioral phenomena can be explained in terms of
interaction that takes place between the person and the
socio-cultural context of which he/she is a part.
