Drop Out Problem WMS 40 System

Recently we’ve had an increase of customers reclamation on Drop Outs

with the WMS 40 system. Thanks to your quick market feedback we’ve
been able to solve this problem. As the reason we found a capacitor with a
wrong value within the mute circuit of the receiver . This leads to a longer
mute period (some 100 ms) in the case of drop outs. Therefore even
uncritical (short) drop outs can be recognised. The problem could be easily
solved by removing this capacitor.
This problem could affect all shipments of WMS 40 that left our Vienna
factory before November 30th., 2000.
All shipments of WMS 40 from December 1st.,2000 onwards have
this defect solved.

Although the number of reclamation’s is still far underneath 1% of the

sold systems we like to quickly react on this issue. In order to keep the
customer satisfaction on a high level we suggest the following procedure
in case of reclamation:

Please check if drop out problem is not caused by a handling failure,

ensure that:

a) the squelch threshold is set to minimum

b) the receiver is properly placed (operating distance approx. 50 m, clear
line of sight between transmitter and receiver antenna, place the
receiver clear of walls and metal objects)
c) there is no interference and intermodulation problem caused by other
RF transmitting devices (TV station, other Radio Mic, mobile phones,
Walky Talky, digital devices like PC´s, FX, etc.)

If you’re sure that no handling failure occurred we would like to ask you to
repair or exchange the receiver without costs for the customer.

Exchange Pool:
Should you wish to establish an exchange pool to provide your customers
with an immediate service, AKG would be prepared to send you a limited
number of units at an exceptional discount.
Consult with your Sales Manager the details.

Stock Rework
Furthermore we would ask you to rework your stock products to avoid
future problems on the market and keep the high quality image of the
WMS 40 . Please be so kind to advise the number of units you have
reworked.
Following you’ll find the repair instructions:

1) Remove the receivers side panels if necessary

2) Open the 8 housing screws located on the bottom side as well as the 2
screws holding the XLR connector
3) Remove the PCB from the receiver housing as the capacitor is located
on the bottom side of the board
4) Remove the capacitor (indicated in the picture below)
5) Reassemble SR 40 and check for function.
6) In our service centre in Vienna the proposed work takes 7 to 8 Minutes,
