Shewhart and hence are also
known as Shewhart charts.

whether the process is stable or
not. If the process is stable, the
process will only have inherent
variation (Common Cause
variation).

variation is given by Control limits
(Upper and Lower control limits).
Any process variation outside
these limits is considered a
Special Cause Variation.

Mistake Proofing, or Poka Yoke - is

a technique for eliminating errors
by making it impossible to make
mistakes in the process. It is often
considered the best approach to
process control.

is even better to make it
impossible to do it wrong the first

3. COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS

Mistake proofing can sometimes

be done at zero cost and requires
enormous expenditure at other
times. Similar is the case with
control charts. Some equipents
come with industrial automation
that builds control charts along the
way. There are situations where
capturing data points and plotting
them has a major cost. Cost
Benefit analysis needs to be done
to select a suitable approach
