What was the purpose of the 3rd unpublished novel of Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s “Makamisa”?
Jose Rizal has the passion to write his novel, he motivates his self to write a novel that can set free to
our beloved country to the Spanish colonizer by using written literature that can motivate reader to
fight for the freedom of the country. Rizal write the two novels that has the title of Noli Me Tangere
and El Filibusterismo and these two novels has successfully published and attract many readers that
are interested about the Philippines, after he finish writing El Filibusterismo Rizal created a sequel
which called “Makamisa” the 3rd unpublished novel of Dr. Jose Rizal

His main purpose was to compose a novel in Tagalog language that is unquestionably devoted to
Tagalog perusers so it will be easy for them to understand the message and not please the
Europeans. Another reason, to get away from criticism, he chose to settle it by composing a novel in
a more artistic and literary way. And to write a novel that will focus on Tagalog ethics in order to
provide the virtues, defects, and customs of the Tagalog. Additionally, he aims to change the public
language at that point which is Spanish into our own special Tagalog language. Cunanan, (2015)

Most of written literature of Rizal were focus on western readers because of Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo was written in Spanish language. Rizal Decided to write his El Filibusterismo sequel in
Tagalog language which called is Makamisa “after mass” the 3 rd unpublished novel. The purpose of
this novel is to help poor Tagalogs to understand his written Literature about the reality of the
Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. Rizal wanted that time to help the Philippines bring back
their own national language which is Tagalog because Spanish was the official language of the
Philippines during that time.

Rizal’s chief aim was to reform Philippine society, first by uncovering its ills and second, by
awakening the Filipino youth. His enemies were the oppressive colonial government, but especially
the corrupt elements among the friars, members of the religious orders that exerted the greatest
influence over the government and thereby held complete sway over the lives of the Filipinos. Rizal
knew the best way to awaken the youth and lead them toward the right action was through education,
but especially foreign education. Local education is being controlled by the friars then kept the
Filipinos in the dark, ignorant of their rights and heritage and meek in the face of oppression. This
was partly why he left for Spain in 1882, to continue his studies there. Reyno, (2012)

Rizal studied abroad about the law and the government outside the Philippines so that he will be able
to help his fellow Filipino to see the atrocity of the Spanish government towards the Indios “Filipino
Natives”. Studying in the Philippines during Spanish colonialism is a bad decision for your education
because during that time Friars manipulated the educational system of the Philippines to avoid
conflict with the Spanish government and so that Filipinos remain in the dark, ignorant of their rights
and blind towards to Spanish government how they ruled Philippines injustice. Rizal’s main goal in his
beloved country is to change Philippine society. Finding the cause of this problem and help
youngsters to open their eyes to see the reality Rizal believed that proper education is the most
powerful weapon to destroy the oppressive colonial government.

Makamisa is a sequel of El Filibusterismo, this written literature was written in two languages,
Tagalog and Spanish, the purpose of the third novel is to target the Filipino audience because his
past novel was aimed at the European audience and Rizal wants to change the national language
into Tagalog. This novel remains unfinished, and people are curious about what will happen in the
story if this novel was published.
