Unprejudiced Opportunities

The learning rights of special individuals

Judgment and prejudice are the crusher of dreams but with inclusive education everyone will be provided a
shield to these dream-crushing factors.

Special Education (SPED) or more commonly associated with inclusive education is a program designed
to provide training and workshops for individuals who are differently abled and needs special treatment.
The aim of this program is to meet the learning gaps of these individuals in both academic and life-skills.

This is implemented because of how the Department of Education (DepEd) observed the substandard
situation of disabled persons. They have concluded that these individuals should start being independent
and be more self-reliant.

This program is under the Republic Act 7277 which is an act providing for the rehabilitation, self-development
and self-reliance of disabled person and their integration into the mainstream of society and for other purposes. This
republic act emphasizes the need for diversification and how these individuals should be treated in a society of
innumerable people.

Special education is designed for exceptional individuals. This includes visually and hearing impaired individuals,
handicapped individuals, and persons with Intellectual Disability (ID), a type of disability wherein an individual is
having a hard time digesting information no matter how many times another person tell it to them.

As a normal human being, you would think that being a teacher for these individuals is a Herculean task knowing that
they are not normal. This is not the case for these astounding sped teachers and specialist as they developed a
different approach when dealing with them. Additionally, to be able to teach and train these individuals, you should
have the patience and of course the heart to really put your mind to teaching them.

To contextualize, this program is already implemented in Jesus J. Soriano, which is a good initiative because of how
large the population is in Barangay Catalunan Grande with a recent count to 41,171.
According to Mrs. Conchita Mamites, SPED Teacher, the most common disability she has to deal with in Jesus J.
Soriano NHS is ID.

Additionally, according to Mrs. Conchita Mamites “the teacher must have the patience to always repeat and repeat,
the teachers who handles these kind of learners should undergo training, but I think aside from training the teacher
must have the heart, because if you have the heart you are willing to do all of this”.

The implementation of this program is a terrific initiative because of its beneficial effects not just for disabled persons
but also to teachers. With this, disabled person will be more self-reliant and be more confident to mingle with normal
people in a society. As to teachers, with this type of education, their professional growth will be improved as well as
their personal development.

This program is of big help for individuals with disability to be dependent and to learn things a human should learn. It
helped and will continue to help them to be more confident and to have a more equal and unprejudiced opportunities.
