Attainment Target(s): To enable pupils to:

1. Estimate, compare and use various types of measurement.

Strand: Measurement

Benchmark: Estimate and measure distance

Objective/s: Students will

1. Measuring length and distance in kilometres and millimetres.

Specific Objectives/Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson pupils should be able
to:

1. Tell the difference between kilometres and millimetre

2. Understand how to measure length and distance using kilometres and millimetres.
3. Convert between kilometres and millimetres.

Skills: observing, measuring, writing, speaking, listening

Vocabulary: measurement, kilometre, millimetre

Materials/ Resources: chart, textbook, notebook, measuring tools

Content Summary:

Length is the measurement that describes how long an object is. It is the distance from end to
end. We can measure the length of an object by using different units like meter, centimeters,
feet, inches The relationship of every other unit with the base unit (meters) is given below:

1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m)

1 hectometer (hm) = 100 m
1 decameter (dam) = 10 m
1 decimeter (dm) = 1/10 m = 0.1 m
1 centimeter (cm) = 1/100 m = 0.01 m
1 millimeter (mm) = 1/1000 m = 0.001 m

DAY 1

Topic: Kilometre and Millimetre

Teaching Learning Activities

Engage:

The students will be engaged with a song about the metric system
https://youtu.be/U9RzZDXww_0 After watching the video the students will be asked to share
what the know about measuring length and distance.

Explore:

Students will be divided into pairs and given different objects to measure they are to record
the measurement in millimetres. (mm). Also, they will be required to use footsteps to
measure distance base on a landmark to another in their school and record this measurement
in kilometre (km).

Explain:

The students will be sharing their finding with the class for discussion.

We can measure the length of an object by using different units like meter, centimeters, feet,
inches One kilometer is equal to 1000000 millimeter:

1km = 1km×1000000 = 1000000mm

One millimeter is equal to 0.000001 kilometers:

1mm = 1mm/1000000 = 0.000001km

Elaborate:

The students will be writing the different metric unit used to measure different things in their
surroundings.

Evaluate:

Students will be completing activities in their mathematics textbook page 44 and 45

Objective/s: Students will

1. Understand metre
2. Measure and compare lengths and distance with metre rule

Specific Objectives/Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson pupils should be able
to:

1. Understand the concept of centimeters and meters as units of length

2. Accurately measure and compare lengths and distances using a metre rule.
3. Convert metre to centimetre and visa versa.

Skills: observing, measuring, writing, speaking, listening

Vocabulary: measurement, kilometre, millimetre

Materials/ Resources: tape measure, ruler

Content Summary:

The basic unit of length in the metric system is the meter. All units of length in the metric
system are derived

from the meter. The prefix “centi-“means one hundredth.

1 centimeter=1 one-hundredth of a meter

DAY 2

Topic: Centimetre and metre

Teaching Learning Activities

Engage:

The students will be having a recap about what they have learned so far about the metric
system by singing the metric song ( https://youtu.be/U9RzZDXww_0 ) and learning the
poem.

Explore:

The students will be place in pairs and given a worksheet to determine what type of
measurement hey will use when measuring each item on the worksheet. After completing the
worksheet students will be sharing their result with the class.

measure. The students will be instructed to measure each object in their set using the metre

Objective/s: Students will

1. Measure lengths with appropriate tools

Specific Objectives/Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson pupils should be able
to:

1. Measure lengths using appropriate tools.

2. Understand the concept of units and choose appropriate units for measuring different
objects.
3. Practice estimating and measuring lengths accurately.

Skills: Measuring, observing, listening, speaking, writing

Vocabulary: measurement, kilometre, millimetre, centimetre, metre

Materials/ Resources: Measuring tapes, Rulers, Yardsticks, Meter sticks, Various objects of
different lengths (e.g., pencils, books, paperclips, markers), Worksheets or graph paper,
Scissors, Glue

Link to other subject areas:

Content Summary:

Some metric units for measuring length are millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers.
Millimeters and centimeters are found on a ruler. There is a meter stick that measures 1
meter. A metric tape measure can be used to measure multiple meters. If the object is very
tiny, use a ruler for millimeters.
If the object is less than 30 cm use a ruler for centimeters.

If the object is between 30 cm and 2 or so meters use a meter stick.

If the object is greater than a few meters, use a metric tape measure.

If the object is a long distance, for instance across town, use a kilometer odometer.

DAY 3

Topic: Measurement tools

Teaching Learning Activities

Engage:

The lesson will begin by asking students what they know about measuring lengths and what
tools they have used before. A KWL chart will be on the board (K for what they already
Know, W for what they Want to know, and L for what they Learned). The student responses
will be written under the K column and encourage them to share their prior knowledge and
questions.

Explore:

The students will be placed in pairs and asked to use different measuring tools to measure
different items around their school compound.

Explain:

The students will be sharing the results with the class. The teacher will be helping the
students to make the necessary corrections to their result.
