 Comparative: er

→ Short words ( 1 syllabe)


Old → older slow → slower cheap → cheaper nice →nicer

IMPORTANT:
1. Sometimes a words end in a vowel + a consonan, for example: hot, big …
When it happens, before add er, the consonant at the end is “dobled”.
Like these: big → bigger hot → hotter

2. Words ending in y → cut Y and add ier. For example:

easy → easier heavy → heavier early → earlier

3. far – good – bad : They are different :

Far → further good → better bad → worse

NOW READ THE SENTENCES BELLOW:

1- Rome is old but Athens is older.


2- Athens is older than Rome.
3- Is it cheaper to go by bus or by car.
4- To go by bus is cheaper than go by car.

 Comparative : more … than

→ Long words ( 2/ 3/ 4 syllabes) we use: more + adjective + than


careful → more careful
polite → more polite
expensive → more expensive

NOW READ THESE SENTENCES:


1- Susan is more careful than Jack.
2- Your job is more interesting than mine.

 Comparative : less … than → to express inferiority


1- My car is less expensive than a Ferrari. = My car is cheaper than a Ferrari.

 A bit / much → That house is a bit bigger than mine. / Xuxa´s house is
much bigger than mine.
The hotel was much more expensive than I expected.

 Superlative:

The superlative form is →the + adjective + est or the most + adjective

→ Short words ( old/ cheap/ nice…) → the + est. For example:


Old → the oldest cheap → the cheapest nice → the nicest
