REQUEST, PERMISSION AND OFFERS

1.1 Request

Request means asking for something from someone or us asking someone to


do something to us. The use of request words can be found in the real world
and in cyberspace, such as on social media Instagram, Facebook, Twitter,
WhatsApp and so on.

Request means a request or request, where this meaning can also depend on the
meaning of the whole sentence. Requests can also be adjusted to situations and
conditions, even in various fields such as IT, request means the process when
the server reads what the client sends via the web server application.

Example request

- Can I use your book for a moment?


- Can I ask a question?
- Do you mind if I use the phone first?
- Can I go to the room first?
- Please close the door
- Can you return this book?
- Please turn off the room lights, I want to sleep
- Can I ask you about yesterday’s assignment?
1.2 Permission
Permission (asking for permission)
Permission is an expression of asking someone for permission to do or do
something. For example, when you are at home and want to ask your
mother’s permission to go to school, or play at a friend’s house.

Apart from that, the expression permission can also be used when you want to
ask permission from the teacher when you cannot attend school, or when
you want to leave the classroom to go to the toilet.

Examples of permission expression sentences that are commonly used every
day:

-Can I use your laptop?


-May I come to your house?
-Could I talk to you for a while?
-Would you mind if I took your luggage?
-Do you mind if your son comes and plays in my house?
-Is it ok if we go together?
-Would it be ok if I arranged the chairs like this?
Permissions are divided into 2, namely:
-Giving permission
Giving permission is an expression of giving permission to someone to do or
do something.

So, giving permission is a positive response when someone asks for our
permission. The following are some examples of giving permission
expressions that are commonly used every day:

Sure.
No problem.
Of course.
As you wish.
Please do it.
I don’t mind, it’s ok.
If you wish so.
Go ahead.

-Refusing permission
Refusing permission is an expression of refusing to give someone permission
to do or do something.

However, even if you refuse, you still have to use polite sentences, for example
by adding the words: please or I’m sorry.

Examples of sentences for expressions of refusing permission that are


commonly used every day:

-I’m sorry, but you can’t


-No, please don’t
-I’m afraid that is impossible
-Unfortunately, I have to say no
-Please don’t do that
-I prefer if you don’t do so
-That’s not a good idea
-I have to say no, I’m sorry

1.3 Offer

Offer is an expression of the desire by people in front of the other people to do


something. Something or not to do

Offer means to give something physical or abstract to someone which can be taken
as a gift or a trade.

Offer can be given in terms of food, money, solution, friendship or a bargain, it can
be taken or refused.

ACCEPTING AN OFFER:
-Yes.please. I really appreciate it.
-Thank you. That’s very kind of you.
-Yes, please. That would be lovely.
-Sure. Thank you.
-Oh,thanks. That would be very nice.
-Thank you. I appreciate your help.
-Yes,please. That would be very kind of you.
-I’d love to

DECLINING AN OFFER:
-It’s okay, I can do it myself
-No. Thank you
-No, thanks. I don’t want another helping
-Don’t worry, I will do it myself.
-That’s alright, I will manage on my own

SUGGESTION AND ADVICE

2.1 Suggestion
Suggestion means suggestions, recommendations, or suggestions. Meaning,
asking suggestion is an expression of asking someone for advice to consider.
Meanwhile, giving suggestions is an expression to give advice or suggestions
to other people about something.

RUMUS
Should is a modal verb used to express suggestions and the formula used is
S + Should + Verb 1
S + Shouldn’t + Verb 1
The subjects used can be nouns, pronouns, and noun phrases. Here’s an example
sentence:

-You should sleep early


-You should not go to school before fully recovered

Ought to
Ought means it is best or must, so this word can be used to express a sentence
of suggestion or expression of suggestion, the formula used is.

S + Ought to + Verb 1
S + Ought not to + Verb 1

The subjects used can be nouns, pronouns, and noun phrases. Here’s an example
sentence:

-She ought to listen to her parents

-They oughtn’t to throw the rubbish into the river

Had better
Just like should and ought to, had better also has the same meaning, namely
should and should. The form of the formula used is.

S + Had better + Verb 1


S + Had better not + Verb 1

The subjects used can be nouns, pronouns, and noun phrases. Here’s an example
sentence:

-You had better study hard about math


-You had better not be late for school

Using phrases at the beginning


The next formula is that you can use a prefix phrase before forming a suggestion
sentence, for example “maybe you should...” and “I suggest you to...”
Here’s an example sentence:

-I suggest you tell the truth, before it’s too late


-Maybe you should stay home instead of taking a rest

Example of a suggestion sentence, "I have a suggestion for our holiday plan.
Why don't we visit the Grand Canyon this year?”

2.2 ADVICE
Advice is an expression used to give suggestions or
recommendations to other people about what should be done in a
situation. Giving advice is usually done when someone asks for

advice or help from another person to overcome the problem or
decision they are facing.
Difference between suggestion and advice? Suggestion is a
suggestion, while advice means advice. The difference between
the two is that suggestions are usually used in casual or
informal contexts related to everyday choices or decisions. This
is different from advice which tends to be more serious and
formal.
