Extra Problems with Homework 04

1. [challenge] A thin metallic wire of thermal conductivity k, diameter D, and length 2L is annealed by

passing an electrical current through the wire to induced a uniform volumetric heat generation q̇. The

ambient are around the wire is at a temperature T∞ , while the ends of the wire at x = ±L are also

maintained at T∞ . Heat transfer from the wire to the air is characterized by the convection coefficient

h. Obtain an expression for the steady-state temperature distribution T (x) along the wire.

2. [apply] Calculate the fin efficiency, fin effectiveness, and fin heat rate for a straight, square cross-section

fin of length L = 10 mm and base area of 2 mm×2 mm composed of aluminum (k = 237 W/m-K)

with a base temperature of Tb = 150◦ C in forced air with h = 25 W/m2 -K and T∞ = 20◦ C.

3. [apply, challenge] Annular aluminum fins of rectangular profile are attached to a circular tube having

an outside diameter of 50 mm and an outer surface temperature of 200◦ C. The fins are 4 mm thick

and 15 mm long. The system is in ambient air at a temperature of 20◦ C, and the surface convection

coefficient is 40 W/m2 -K. HINT: Use Figure 4.13 on page 181.

(a) What are the fin efficiency and effectiveness?

(b) If there are 125 such fins per meter of tube length, what is the rate of heat transfer per unit length

of tube?
