Extra Problems with Homework 02

1. [concept] Write the heat equation in 1-D (in x), time-dependent, constant k, with generation.

2. [concept] How would you describe the boundary condition at r = 0 for a cylinder or sphere with

generation? Specified temperature, specified flux, convective, or adiabatic?

3. [challenge] Passage of an electric current through a long conducting rod of radius ri and thermal

conductivity kr results in uniform volumetric heating at a rate of q̇. The conducting rod is wrapped

in an electrically nonconducting cladding material of outer radius ro and thermal conductivity kc ,

and convection cooling is provided by an adjoining fluid (T∞ , h). For steady-state conditions, write

appropriate forms of the heat equations for the rod and cladding. Express appropriate boundary

conditions for the solution of these equations.

4. [concept] Can you use the equivalent resistance method when there is heat generation? If not, how

must you solve the problem?

5. [apply]Write an equivalent resistance network for the following system and compute it for the total

resistance per unit depth into the page. Material A is pure aluminum, material B is AISI 304 stainless

steel, and material C is fused silica. The blocks on the left have the same height as each other and the

blocks on the right have the same height as each other.

6. [apply] A long resistance wire of radius rw = 0.2 cm and thermal conductivity kw = 50 W/m-K with

uniform volumetric heat generation q̇ = 50 W/cm3 is embedded in a ceramic insulation of thickness

0.5 cm and thermal conductivity ki = 1.2 W/m-K. If the outer surface of the insulation is at 45◦ C, what

are the temperatures at the center of the wire (r = 0) and at the wire-insulation interface (r = rw )?
