TO BE KEPT LAMINATED ON THE BRIDGE

ALL THE FOLLOWING CHECKS SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY THE OOBW WHEN NAVIGATING / BEFORE
ENTERING IN EXPECTED ICE AREA AND A RELEVANT ENTRY SHOULD BE MADE IN THE BRIDGE LOG BOOK

1. GENERIC
- Have the following been informed on the ice conditions?
• The Master & Bridge Navigation Officers
• The Chief Engineer & E/R Officers
• The crew
- Hand steering engaged if appropriate
- Has ETA been passed to agent and ice breaker as appropriate?
- Have watertight doors been shut as appropriate?
- Has ice breaker been contacted (if applicable)?
- Has speed been moderated and / or adjusted subject to ice conditions?
- Has course been modified (if necessary) according to ice breaker instructions?
- Has been agreed the communication procedures with the ice breaker and the other vessels of the
convoy (if any)?
- Has the inspections’ frequency of sounding tanks, void spaces and bilges been increased?
- Have instructions been issued to monitor weather reports and ice advisory services?
- Has the transmittal of the danger message been made in accordance with SOLAS Ch 5 Reg 2 and
recorded in the Official Log Book?
- Are ballast and fresh water tanks full no more than 90% and their heating in good working condition?
- Are search lights available and in good operation for the ice navigation?
- Is propeller completely submerged and as deep as possible?
- Is vessel (ice belt) advised?
- Is adequate number of crew for continuous bridge watch (if at sea)? (Ensure applicable Bridge Watch
Condition and according to ice navigation regulations)
- Is adequate number of crew for safety rounds on deck, taking in account exposure to cold / cold stress?
- Are all sea water and weather expose pipes well drained in order to be avoid their blocking with ice?
- Is the Steam line on deck always opened?
- In case of extremely low temperatures, continuously steam supply and running of the forward hydraulic
station and its cooling pump for the mooring winches and BLS system is required.
2. PERSONNEL PROTECTION
- Are all the crewmembers equipped with appropriate and warm clothing?
- Have measures been taken to protect crew from blisters, frost bites and immersion foot?
- Has been established period of exposure to cold for watch keepers?
- Is supply of proper cold weather clothing and PPE ensured?
- Is appropriate content of first aid kit and necessary drugs ensured?
- Is the indoors temperature (in accommodation and E/R) controlled from going down to unacceptable
values for the crew and the engines?
3. FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT
- Are all fire and foam lines empty and well drained?
- Are the draining valves and lowest hydrant open?
- Are lines ready for immediate use at all times? (Not blanked)
- Are monitors, hydrant valves and any other moving part well greased and protected, to avoid ice/snow
accumulation, preventing their immediate operation?

4. MOORING EQUIPMENT
- Are mooring wires and synthetic ropes protected by cover until the last moment before use?
- Are anchors stoppers and rigging protected by grease?
- Are windlass and mooring winches engaging gears, clutches, etc protected by grease?
- Are the control boxes and motion levers been protected by covers?
- Does Hydraulic oil circulates and heated at all times when external temperature is below zero C?
- Are the heaters of the hydraulic windlasses unit always switched on?
- Are the chain lockers positively drained of any water before entering iced water, and so kept at all times?
- Are both anchors lowered stocked out? (Weather permitting)
5. CARGO/BUNKER HEATING SYSTEM
- Are heating coils and lines (if not in use) well drained and blown?
- Is steam delivery line blanked off?

6. CARGO/COW AND BALLAST SYSTEMS


- Are cargo and COW lines well drained after pressure test?
- Are MARPOL lines and drains free and protected against clogging?
- Is dry cargo (without bottom settling water) used, when pressure testing COW, MARPOL and cargo piping?
- Are hydraulic cargo/COW valves protected by cover?
- Are valves frequently activated while in subfreezing temperature to avoid freezing blockage?
- Are manual valves on deck greased and protected by covers? (Special attention to be given on the
manual drop valve)
- Are COW machine gearboxes protected by covers? (Gearbox to be replaced if found to be contaminated
with water)
- Are hydraulic ballast valves in empty tanks frequently activated to avoid freezing blockage?
- Is the heating system to all sea chests checked to be in good working condition and kept in operation
whilst the vessel is in iced waters?
- Are drip pans (trays) for cargo manifolds and bunker vent-pipes kept free of oil/water/snow/ice?
- Are manifolds drip pans’ drains free and protected against clogging due to ice, (use anti-freeze liquid and
suitable plugs for drip pans’ drains).
- Is operation of cargo instrumentation ensured?
- Is access to cargo systems on deck ensured?
7. INERT GAS SYSTEM
- Is the heating on (operates) on the Deck Water Seal in freezing temperatures and is the steam supply
kept under continuous circulation, in order to avoid clogging of steam piping and keep the deck seal’s
sealing water warm?
- Is the inlet/outlet of sealing water free/unblocked from ice and so been kept at all times? (Water flow)
- Is the IGS room kept warm at all times, in order to avoid Oxygen analyzer’s unit malfunction?
- Is the IG main line and branches on deck well drained of all liquids that may have possibly accumulated
during the sea passage?
- Are there mallets and steam hose available during operation in extremely cold weather conditions, in
order to free-up possible clogged IG piping on deck?
- Are deck officers instructed to continuous monitor the IGS pressure in each cargo tank, in order to
urgently react in case of clogged IGS piping on deck?
- Has the Deck breaker adequate anti-freezing liquid being added as per Maker’s instructions and so
being kept at all times?
- Are P.V valves protected by canvas covers, and cones shielded with Vaseline or grease?

- Are pressure and vacuum sides of P.V valves free from ice before the commencement and throughout
any cargo operation?
- Is the de-icing system for the PV and other valves in good working condition and ready to be used if
necessary?
- Is the Mast Raiser Valve protected by grease and cover?
- Are the flame arrestors checked to be free of ice before the commencement of any cargo/bunker
operation?
- Are the auto and manual valves on I.G main line and tanks inlets greased and protected by cover?

8. AIR VENTS
- Are all air vents for ballast, fuel oil, domestic and boiler water protected by covers and checked to be free
of ice?
9. ACCOMMODATION LADDERS AND LIFEBOATS
- Have air motors been removed and stored accordingly?
- Are gear-boxes protected by covers?
- Is there a backup system ready in case the air line becomes frozen?
- Is the lifeboat motor cooling system filled with anti-freeze?
- Are the lifeboats engines filled with anti-freezing fuel? (Arctic Diesel, freezing point –40C)
- Are the batteries fully charge and the frequency of their inspection increased?
- Is safe access on board and safe walkway ensured and free of ice?
10. PNEUMATIC AIR SYSTEM
- Are the water trap caps drained and kept empty?
- Are all air-lines on deck empty and drained if not in use?

11. PILOT (JACOB’S) LADDER


- Is the ladder stored immediately after use, or lifted on deck and protected by cover?

12. SIRENS, NAVIGATION LIGHTS, WHEELHOUSE WINDOWS


- Is the heating system (if fitted), kept on to the ship’s whistles?
- Is the air or steam driven whistle kept with drain valves crack open in order to avoid freezing blockage?
- Are the navigation lights glasses covered with white Vaseline by reason of preventing ice accumulation?
- Are the wheelhouse’s glasses arranged with a ducting of warm air constantly directed to the internal side
of at least 3 windows (1 on the center line and 1 on each side of it) in order to prevent ice/snow
accumulation and grant good visibility at all times? (Ignore if wheelhouse is fitted with electric heating
system)
- Have the bridge windows been cleaned externally with washer fluid made for extraordinary
temperatures?
- Have any other material been applied (wax, mist repellant) to the bridge windows externally to reduce
moisture’s build up?
13. RADAR ANTENNAS
- Are the antennas been kept rotating constantly at all times in freezing temperatures? (If gear boxes are
not filled with oil and fitted with heater) (where appropriate function is installed)
- Is the radar’s transmitting power (TX) switched off at all times while alongside the dock? (for safety
reasons)
14. DE-ICING SYSTEM

- Is there available or arranged emergency de-icing system able to reach any part of the vessel, from
forecastle to poop deck making use of hot water and/or steam, ready to be used at all times?
- Is there sufficient quantity of salt for ice melting, and sand as anti-slip measure? (chemicals shall NEVER
be used for melting ice)
- Is availability of adequate personnel ensured for deck operations, incl. de-icing?
15. STEERING GEAR MOTORS
- Are the steering gear motors kept running at all time in order to maintain the fluidity of the oil?
16. EMERGENCY COOLING SYSTEM FOR MAIN ENGINE AND AUX. ENGINES
- Are the heating of the cooling water sea chests (steam injectors) working at optimum efficiency?
- Is the machinery space constantly and sufficiently manned to ensure effective and prompt action in case
cooling water becomes too cold or in case the flow becomes inadequate due to the build up of ice into
the strainers and on the sea chest so plugging the intake?
- If cooling water becomes too cold, has the water flow been reduced to allow engine temperature to
return to normal?
- If the flow becomes inadequate due to the buildup of ice into the strainers and on the sea chest thus
plugging the intake, has the RPM been reduced until the heating system on the sea chest has restored
safe conditions and the strainer is free of ice?
17. FREEZING SPRAYS
- During freezing sprays, is the buildup of ice and superstructures avoided as far as possible?
- In case of heavy freezing sprays take place, has the vessel reduced its speed, or alter course in order to
diminish bow pounding (ice accumulation) and therefore minimize the effects of the phenomenon?
18. ICE ADVISOR
- In case of helicopter usage for embarkation or disembarkation of pilot(s), is the Helicopter Landing or
Winching Area well cleared of ice and crew/equipment ready as per “Guidelines to Helicopter
Operations”? (where applicable)
19. PORT, PILOT, TERMINAL REQUIREMENTS
- Are both anchors free of ice and ready when arriving at the pilot station?
- Are all mooring equipments free of ice and ready when arriving at the port dock?
- Is the inert gas plant, cargo, COW and ballast system ready and fully operational before arriving at the
port?
- Have the P.V valves been tested and found to be operational before arrival at dock?
- Is the embarkation ladder and the walking in open deck corridor free of ice/snow?
- Have all the exposed to weather conditions valves (hydraulic and manual) been tested and found
operational?
- Are all the pollution prevention measures and equipments in readiness before the commencement of
cargo transfer?
- Are the deck sides and tanks cargo measuring points free of ice/snow before arriving in the port?
- Are there enough equipment/materials available on board for de-icing procedures?
- Are sea inlet arrangement maintained ice-free?
- Is the ballast system heated and ice-free?
- Before plugging, are scuppers cleaned from ice and dried?
20. FREEZING RUDDER
- In order to avoid rudder blades freezing due to the extremely low temperatures, steering gear pump must
be in continuously working condition, steering gear to operate plenty times full to port/stbd at least every
15-20 minutes, main engine to operate continuously (if possible) and to make ahead/astern movements

in short periods in order to avoid ice formation on the stern area of the vessel and the aft draft must be
always the maximum permissible taking into your consideration allowable draft in the area and vessel’s
bending moments and shearing forces.
