MAE 3440: Lecture 04 Examples

January 28, 2021

1. A composite plane wall is made of two materials. Material A has a thermal conductivity of kA =

10 W/m-K and material B has a thermal conductivity of kB = 1 W/m-K. The thickness of both mate-

rials in the x-direction is L = 0.1 m and the cross-sectional area is A = 1 m2 . The left side of material

A (at x = 0) is maintained at TH = 300 K and the right side of material B (x = 2L) is maintained

at TC = 100 K. Calculate the heat transfer rate through the composite wall, the temperature at the

interface between materials A and B, and sketch the temperature distribution within each material.

2. We will now repeat the last problem, but instead of the materials being in series, we have placed them

in parallel. In this case the left side of both materials (x = 0) is maintained at TH = 300 K and the

right side of both materials (x = L) is maintained at TC = 100 K. Calculate the heat transfer rate

through the composite wall and the heat transfer rate through the individual materials.
