HOW DO WE GET THE INFORMATION OF

INTERIOR OF EARTH?

Starter
THE STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH

❑ The outside of the planet earth is called the

crust. It is solid rock varying in thickness (0-

60km). There are two types; oceanic and

continental.

❑ The Mantle is the widest section (2900km) made of

thick molten rocks called magma

❑ The outer core is liquid nickel and iron. with high

pressure and temperature

❑ The inner core is a solid nickel and iron. very high

pressure and a temperature over 5500°c

❑ The crust is split into large pieces

called plates, which sit on top of the mantle.

LO 1:
EXPLAIN WHAT CAUSES PLATES TO
MOVE?

How can I challenge myself today?

•Convection currents takes place in the mantle.

•The cores heat makes the mantle rise in a current

•The current cools as it gets closer to the surface

•It travels under the plates and pulls them with it.

•When the current cools down more, the convection current

moves back down

•There the temperature increases and the current rises again.

This repeats.
Identify the tectonic plates in the given
map.

Critical Thinking
Each line along which two plates meet is called a plate boundary.
Constructive plate boundary
▪ At a constructive plate boundary, two plates
move apart causing sea floor spreading.
▪ As the two plates move apart, magma rises to
fill the gap and creates new oceanic crust and
volcanoes.
▪ However, since the magma can escape easily
at the surface the volcano does not erupt
violently
▪ Earthquakes are also found at constructive
boundaries.
▪ An example of a constructive boundary is the
Mid Atlantic ridge
2) Destructive plate boundary

•A destructive plate boundary is found where a continental

plate meets an oceanic plate.

•The oceanic plate descends under the continental plate

because it is denser than oceanic plate.

•Once it sinks it melts and new magma is formed that escapes

to the surface as volcanoes through the continental plate

•Deep sea trenches are formed

• The continental plate folds into fold mountains

3) Collision plate boundary

•Collision boundaries occur when two continental

plates move together

• This causes the material between them to buckle and rise up,

forming fold mountains

•The Himalayas are an example of fold mountains.

•They have been formed by the Indo-Australian plate colliding

into the Eurasian plate.

Conservative plate boundary

•Conservative plate boundaries exist where two plates do not

directly collide but slide past each other along a fault

(weakness).

•No volcanoes are found along these plate boundaries because

magma can not escpae, but earthquakes do occur.

•An example of such a boundary is the San Andreas Fault in

California, USA.
