Conduction of thermal energy
Aim : To investigate conduction of thermal energy in metals.

Materials : Metal rods, candle wax, paper clips, a heat source, such as a candle, that can be
used to heat one end of the rod, clamp stands.

Procedure :

1. Melt the candle wax and use the soft wax to attach paper clips to each rod at
intervals of about 5 cm.
2. Clamp one rod so that one end of the rod can be heated, as shown in the
diagram.
3. Heat one end of each rod and observe what happens to the wax and the paper
clips.
Conclusion : Metals are good conductors of heat.

(to be written on left hand side)

Observation : The paperclips closer to the heat source fall first, some of the more distant
paperclips may not fall within the allocated time.
