us, you’re already obsessed with
Kiernan Shipka as badass half-witch
Sabrina Spellman – who isn’t afraid to
stand up for her besties one minute and
take on the Dark Lord the next! GF’s
ed Stacey had a one-on-one chat with
Kiernan about growing up in the public
eye, living next-door to Ross Lynch and
what’s next in Season 2. Praise Satan!

First of all, congratulations on the

success of Season 1 of CAOS.
How does it feel?
It feels amazing! We put our blood,
sweat and tears into this show and I
wouldn’t change it for the world, but
it’s the most challenging thing I’ve ever
done, so to have people responding to it
in such a nice way feels very good.

Did you have any nerves before

It’s interesting because we were still
filming, so we were in this little
bubble of production in
Vancouver, so I kind of had a
lot of mixed feelings about
it coming out. On one
hand, I was really antsy
for people to see it but
then I knew it would take
on this other life and
be this bigger thing.
So yeah I guess I was

nervous to see what people thought of
it because we had so many dedicated
fans who were excited about it before it
even came out – which blew my mind!
– so I really hoped it lived up to their
expectations. By that point I had seen
most of it – I knew I was proud of it and
that it turned out well, so I had a good
feeling about it.
What was it about the character
of Sabrina that you loved?
I really loved how she’s so different from
anyone I’ve ever played before. She’s
so whip-smart and kind of a detective,
like a witchy Nancy Drew, and I loved
that about her. I loved how if something
wasn’t right she stood up for what she
believed in and spoke up and I thought
that was a really important thing in
2019. I also loved her humour. She’s
witty and funny but at the same time
the show is super serious and she goes

I did a little bit of voice recording for
it today so I just got the first peek at
it and it’s sooooo good! I would say

that it’s fiercer, the stakes are higher,
the relationships are more charged
and overall it’s this bigger, better,
scarier season! The first season was
the introduction to everything but this
second season is really twisted and a lot
more lives are in danger. You’ll be on the
edge of your seat the whole time. There
were scenes we were filming where
people would say, “Do you think I’m
going to make it out alive this season!?”
and they were big characters we’re
talking about! So it’s really intense but
its a really fun watch.

Sabrina, so totally!

Not really, I mean, I spent the last nine

believe in those! Life is still going pretty
good so not really!
No doubt you were recognised a
lot from being on Mad Men, but
has that cranked up a notch now?
Yeah, it’s definitely different now.
When Mad Men was on, I was getting

recognised for it, but when it came
off the air and I grew up and looked
different to Sally Draper, it didn’t
happen as much. But now it’s starting
to happen more again and it’s really
adorable. I was just in Italy and I saw a
bunch of Italian people getting excited
and giggling at seeing ‘Sabrina’ which
was so lovely. Then I was in Florida
visiting my grandparents and I got a
lot of people coming up and saying to
me, “You know, you look just like that
girl from Sabrina. Your voice is even
the same!” And I’d just say, “Oh really?
That’s so weird!”

I grew up with Amandla Stenberg and
watching her blossom has been so
incredible and amazing. She’s always

Why do people bully?
This is a tough question as there are a million reasons why someone might choose
to bully another person. Some common reasons include wanting to feel superior, to
make their friends laugh, to feel popular and liked, or to get even with someone who
might have hurt them. If someone is bullying, it’s usually because they feel insecure

1 First of all, you’re not a bad person.
Growing up is hard and there can be so many
things going on in your life that cause you to
lash out or act in a way you normally wouldn’t.
What’s important is to take ownership and
apologise. It’s never too late to change and
you’ll learn an incredible life lesson.
DO A GOOD DEED
2 Stop screenshotting and gossiping and
start inviting someone who is left out to sit
with you or be kind to someone outside your
usual circle. Spreading the good vibes will put
you in a much better headspace and also help
the other person feel seen. So many people
are struggling mentally under the surface and
being kind could literally save their life.
DON’T BE A WATCHER
3 Even if you don’t think you’re a bully, you
could be a watcher. A watcher is someone
who watches someone else be a bully and does
nothing. If your bestie is constantly sending
you nasty messages about others and you’re
not calling them out, you’re a watcher. It’s OK
to take a stand if you see behaviour that’s not
acceptable. If the bullying is serious and you
don’t feel safe calling them out, make sure you
report it to a trusted teacher or parent.

4 It sounds obvious, but if you’re struggling
with something that is causing this behaviour,
it will be so helpful to talk about it with a

I work out every day to maintain
a ‘good’ body, but I think I eat
horribly. Any tips to stop cravings?
L: Firstly, well done on working out!
S: Yeah, that’s the thing people struggle
to find the time for so that’s awesome
you’ve already got that in the bag!
With food, we all go through stages of
craving ‘bad food’ and that can come
with hormones or stress or different
things. Laura and I still treat ourselves,
and something that helps us is not
restricting ourselves for too long. I think
it’s OK as long as it’s small amounts and
you’re balancing it out with wholesome
healthy meals. Don’t beat yourself up
about craving chocolate.
L: Trying new recipes is also a great way
to stick to healthier options. There’s
a misconception that healthy food
isn’t tasty, but there are so many great
options that mean you can stay on track
and then you won’t crave the naughty
stuff as much.
I want to know how you guys
stay so motivated to do exercise.
Sometime I get super lazy, but
then I feel bad when I can’t get
some exercise…
L: It’s all about routine. I think the
biggest thing for us is that we don’t wait
to be motivated. We have a set routine
and we get up and get our workout out
of the way because we know how it’s
going to make us feel afterwards and
give us lots of energy for the day. But at
the same time, just remember you don’t
have to exercise every single day! For us,
we just do what we can when we have
the time. If you miss a day it’s totally OK.

it’s a misconception how much you can
build up your strength and muscles
from them! I used to think that for a
long time but then we’d do it for our
program and my muscles would be
killing! It builds up incredible strength,
so I think it’s a great place to start.
I’ve started getting really jealous

S: First things first, you have the control
over who you follow. So if there’s anyone
who makes you feel bad, make sure you
remove them. That’s not to say you have
to unfollow anyone who’s fit. If they
motivate you then it’s fine. We actually
say that to each other all the time.
We hope people follow us because we
motivate them, not because they want
to look like us.
L: We want them to exercise or eat well
because they are doing it for them. It’s
all genetics anyway! If you look at our
bodies, Steph can get abs but I can’t and
that’s just how I’m built. Abs don’t make
you happy, and most people who achieve
them are on an extremely restrictive
diet – you wouldn’t ever be able to go
out with your friends. So many people
you’re seeing online are edited, even

edited, so try not to compare yourself
because it’s not real!
How did you start your business?
I wouldn’t even know where to
begin!
S: It started off as a passion project for
us. Ebooks were really big at the time
didn’t have a business plan or anything
like that until people were really enjoying
the content and we started thinking
more seriously about it. But it has to be
something you’re passionate about.
I really hate what I see when I look
in the mirror. I am overweight,
but it feels like it’s just too
overwhelming to know where to
start. What do I do?
L: Just take a first small step. In six
months, you might think ‘I should’ve
started ages ago’ when you could start
right now. Try writing your workouts
into your diary, too. That’s what we do
and it helps us stay on track. And find
exercise that you enjoy because there’s
no point going to the gym for three
hours a day and hating it, because you
won’t stick to it. Find something you
love doing, like dancing or swimming, or
just walking around
the block, and it
will soon become
routine for you.

I was going to study musical theatre. I

How does it feel for brands like

the tech space?
I think it’s fantastic! The point of the
campaign is to empower girls to be who
they are and choose their own path.
It’s breaking down those boundaries
that people have previously placed on
young girls, getting them to believe in
themselves and know that whatever they
want to be, they can do that.
You invented a medical device
called Smart Armour. Tell us more.
The Smart Armour was a project I
started when I was in Year 10. I had the
idea following a conversation with my
dad, who works in the field of radiation
therapy and he mentioned that the
breast that wasn’t being treated for
cancer also got some radiation as a
side effect. The Smart Armour basically
protects the breast that isn’t being
treated from exposure to radiation.
Did you face any barriers in
creating it?
Yeah, of course! Radiotherapy is a very
specialised field so coming in as a young
female in Year 10 who didn’t have work
experience, naturally there were going
to be some hurdles, but I’ve been blessed
that the people I’ve been surrounded
with have helped me through it. The
goal for this year is to get a hospital
to run a trial on it.
You were the NSW Young
Australian of the Year for 2018.
How did that feel?
I was honoured to win and it sounds
clichéd but it really has changed my life.
I went from being a backyard scientist
then all of a sudden I was an advocate
for things I never thought I could be.
What advice do you have for
young girls interested in science?
Get involved! If there’s lunchtime
groups or coding groups at school,
get involved as you never know where
they’re going to take you. Also, anyone
can do a science project! There’s nothing
special about me, I’m just a person who
had an interest and decided to pursue it.

The lowdown
Girls have their first period once they’ve reached
puberty, which usually happens anywhere between
10 and 16 years old, but the average age is 12.5. It’s a
normal part of the menstrual cycle, which basically
happens to prepare your body for pregnancy. The
lining of your uterus gets thicker to prepare for a
fertilised egg, but when this doesn’t happen during
the ovulation phase (when you release an egg), your
body sheds the uterus lining after about two weeks
through the vagina with blood. The average female
will have about 450 periods in her lifetime!

Your entire menstrual cycle is broken up into

four stages:
MENSTRUAL – begins when your period starts and
you are shedding the lining.
FOLLICULAR – your body is prepping your ovaries
to release an egg.
OVULATORY – this happens when you release an
egg to be fertilised.
LUTEAL – the phase between ovulation and your
next period.

So WTH is bipolar?
It’s a mental health condition that
involves massive mood and energy
swings. People who have bipolar
experience periods of extreme highs and
lows, which can last for a week or more
at a time. There isn’t one cause, but the
factors that can contribute to it include
genetics, environmental influences,
physical illnesses or substances.
What do I do?
It’s hard to diagnose bipolar disorder
by yourself – there’s over five different
types – so it’s best to reach out to a
parent, friend or guardian and tell them
what you’re going through. They’ll be
able to help you find support from a
mental health professional. Otherwise,
seeing your local GP is a great place
to start as they’ll be able to refer you
to someone who specialises in bipolar
disorder. Just remember that there’s

It’s my first movie and I filmed it
with such amazing people who knew
it was my first movie and made me
feel so comfortable. My favourite
part was filming the first scene where
my character Kenzie is introduced at
school. Throughout the movie she grows
as a person and gets closer to Xander
(Jace Norman) but it was a lot of fun to
film her in her element when she’s at
school and reporting. She’s passionate
about getting every single answer
correct because that’s who she truly is.

and she was amazing. We really focused
on each and every emotion and told

part of my family! I support them and
they support me and we all love each
other. It’s really a blessing honestly
because they’re the sweetest people
and when I get to meet them in person

Bobby Brown and Maddie Ziegler
are all growing up in the spotlight.
How do you navigate that?
I am really lucky to have two friends who
have dealt with so much more and have
such great advice and perspective. I’m so
grateful to be doing what I’m doing, and
the hardest thing is sometimes making a
normal teen mistake and having so many
people have an opinion. Having friends like
them makes it easier and it’s wonderful
knowing that I have such amazing friends
who I know I can trust with my life!

You’re all so busy! How do you

make time for your friendships?
It’s tough! But if you love people, you’ll
always make time for them, and you pick
up right where you left off. We visit each
other whenever we can, and Facetime is
really everybody’s saviour!

You started the anti-bullying

inspired you guys?
First and foremost, we are just teens. And
when someone says something mean or
critical it doesn’t matter whether you have
10 followers or 10 million, it hurts. And
we had all been through sad and scary

human on Instagram, but
this funny girl is now
starring with Cole Sprouse
in the tearjerker Five Feet
Apart. It’s about two teenagers in
hospital with cystic fibrosis (CF) who
need to stay separated at all times or
they risk getting a life-threatening
infection. But that doesn’t stop them
forming a connection from afar. We
couldn’t wait to chat to her and get all
the tea on the film.
How are you?
I’m good. Oh my God, I love Australian
accents so much, I could talk to you
for hours!
Have you ever been to Australia?
I really want to go and I’m actually kind
of obsessed with Rebel Wilson and I’ve
been trying to learn her accent. I do an
Australian accent and everyone says it’s
s**t, but I think it’s pretty good.

This movie made me cry! And one
theme it explores is touch. What
did you think of that idea?
I definitely think it’s a really interesting,
unique thing to explore in terms of a
romance story, and the fact that the two
main characters that fall in love can’t
touch each other. They can’t even get
close to each other!
What kind of research did you do
LQWRWKHZRUOGRIF\VWLFEURVLV"
I did do a lot of research, and luckily we
had Justin [Baldoni] too. He was great
directing Cole and I where to go for
research and introducing us to people.
We also had an actual CF nurse on set,
making sure that we knew everything
that was going on as actors and walking
us through these different scenarios and
what it would really be like with these
kids that she worked with all her life.
Have you met any teens with CF?
Yeah, I have. The girl that I spent the
most time with was named Claire
Wineland. She actually just passed away
recently. Getting to meet her and hang
out with her was my favourite thing
about making this movie, hands down,
and probably one of my favourite things
in my life so far. She was 21 and had
the wisdom of an 80-year-old monk.
She’s also kind of a legend in many ways
because she had a YouTube channel
similar to my character Stella in the
movie and there are a lot of people with
CF that she inspired.
Tell us about working with Cole
– had you met him before?
I had never met him before, but I really
liked working with him. We both work
similarly because we both really cared to
make the movie as real and grounded as
possible, and we both really cared about
doing our part with these characters in
bringing them to life. But then we are
also both just dodos who have fun; well,
I am probably more of a dodo than Cole

You post a lot of goofy stuff on
your Insta. Tell us about that.
INTERVIEW JENNY COONEY
I never really thought about it much
until recently when a few people asked
me similar questions. I am much more
comfortable being silly and having
fun than taking myself too seriously.
I just like taking pictures of my stupid
faces and maybe that’s why it seems
authentic. Seriously, I just did air quotes
when I said ‘authentic’ [laughs]. But it
does make me sad when I see people on
Instagram and I can just tell that they
are trying to be someone that they’re
not or they’re doing something for some
sort of reaction. I just feel like everyone
should be themselves, no matter what.
Congratulations on your
engagement to Brett Dier (from
Jane the Virgin). Is it true you
were the one who proposed?
Yeah, that was me. It was very much not

planned, it was just an ‘in the moment’
thing where my gut or heart just took
over my mouth and I started talking and
had no idea what I was going to say but
all of a sudden I asked him to marry me.
It was the best day of my life, so that was
good, I guess!
Are you planning a wedding soon?
We are waiting. I feel like I am 12 years
old and Brett is internally like seven or
eight so we are taking it slow!
