PORTFOLIO ASIGNMENT EDUC 5281 UNIT 7

Creating lesson plan or writing activities isn’t an easy task as teacher will consider various factor
while planning and implementing the lesson. Every teacher prepares lesson activities with great
enthusiasm keeping in mind the success of delivering the lesson and ensuring to guide the
interest of the diverse student in classroom. In the case of scenario mentioned above where the
teacher create a writing activities that result in student disinterest in the topic as well as finding
assignment extremely difficult for them. There are countless teaching strategies teachers can use
to buy-in and get students interested in writing in content area classes. Effective teaching
strategies comprises proven best practices in education that work in a variety of classroom
environments. Many teachers may use multiple strategies to keep their students engaged
throughout the school year and test their knowledge more comprehensively but creative writing
has more advantage to the success of all subjects as it the foundation of how to read and write.

If I were to find myself in this situation, I will not scrape the lesson activities. I will device
another means to motivate the students to get engage by first finding out from the students likes,
dislikes, what interest them in their learning, how they would like to learn or be taught, as
everyone of the student have various learning preference, abilities and capabilities, need e.t.c.
Students learn at different rates and require different types of levels of support from their
teachers to succeed. This rate and depth of support varies depending on individual need. It
therefore important for teachers to understand the varying level of need within their classroom as
well as barrier to learning students may face (high speed training n.d).

The teacher should start the class with an opening discussion where every student will be ask
about what they have been doing, encourage them to ask what others have been doing. This will
give the teacher an overview of what the student interest could. As they asked each others’
question the teacher should listen in to the conversation while setting up the classroom enable
teachers to monitor without distracting the learners. Afterward student would asked to share the
interesting thing they have learnt, this in turn will set the tune of the classroom.

I will engage the student in conversation at the beginning by asking their prior knowledge to
know where to start from or what is lacking in the writing activities. Then, student will engage in
conversation about the subject matter by begin with an interesting fact which students have no
idea about, this will serve as a jump start to the brain. By doing all these things get students
engage by talking right from the start of lesson which will give the teacher an insight into what
would interest the learner Cambridge blog (n.d).

Making the lesson simpler and relevant to student allows for engagement, as relevancy is very
important in learning, when students can not relate what they are learning to their daily life or
real situation around them they feel de-motivated. Explaining the lesson to students a simpler
manner could make the class seem easy, interesting and understandable. Teacher can make
learning relevant to students by creating learning plan which can achieve learning goal and also
incorporating text that students find relatable to real situation for them to engage in learning.
When students are exposed to real challenging issue facing them it will ultimately result in
students getting more involved in the text. Relevant issues will promote rich conversations
between students as well (Barnett, A. (2017, August 2). .

In writing, it is necessary for teacher make known to the students that there are no set rules for
writing and they can write whatever they like and how they like. This is the first breakthrough
for students to lighten the heavy burden on their reading and writing skills. When students feel
that their writing assignment will not undergo any criticism and they all have choice of writing as
well as what to read allows them demonstrate and put down their innermost thinking which bring
about creativity and it enable students to be aware of what they are, why and where they might
choose to use them but it shouldn’t be prescriptive (The guardian (n.d).

While students are given choice to choose what they will read teacher can simply have students
turn to a partner and read their favorite sentence or one example of the skill they are working on.
When students cooperatively learn from one another, it promotes social interaction and develops
oral communication skills as it help students enunciate on their reasoning, conclusion and
comprehension. Studies shows that peer learning in which students explain concepts and ideas to
each other has the potential to improve comprehension considerably (Thougthco (n.d).
Therefore, share time can motivate reluctant writer or readers to get the assignment done as they
will be excited to share with a friend (Edutopia (n.d). when students feel their writing has a
purpose, they enjoy it more.

Using imagination in teaching sparks creativity in student learning and it is necessary if we are to
make meaning of our experience. Imagination provides us with the ability to understand
information and enables us to make sense of the world and the people in it. In the classroom,
imagination enables students to explore new ways to think about ideas. As the students create an
imaginary writing this will also lead them to make references to what they have experienced in
their life. According to Milora (1987), explored the idea of imagination as the link between
emotional and intellectual thinking: the images we imagine are created from the connection
between what we feel and what we think, and aid in developing deeper understanding
