Transformer Vector Group Task
Electric Machines (EEE-371)

Simulation of “Transformer Vector Group”

Objective
The objective of this task is to study the phase shift in a three phase transformer. Primary
and secondary windings are connected differently, the secondary voltage waveforms will
differ from the corresponding primary voltage waveforms by 30 electrical degrees. This is
called a 30 degree phase shift. When two transformers are connected in parallel, their phase
shifts must be identical; if not, a short circuit will occur when the transformers are
energized.

Winding connection designations

First Symbol: for High Voltage: Always capital letters.
D=Delta, S=Star, Z=Interconnected star, N=Neutral
Second Symbol: for Low voltage: Always Small letters.
d=Delta, s=Star, z=Interconnected star, n=Neutral.
Third Symbol: Phase displacement expressed as the clock hour number (1,6,11)

Software implementation (Equipment & Test Setup):

Three single phase transformer units, three phase AC source, Voltmeters and Cathode Ray
Oscilloscope (CRO)

Transformer Delta & Delta Connection

Procedure for Hardware setup as well as software:
1) Connect all the primary side of three single phase transformer in Delta
connection as shown in above figure.
2) Connect all the secondary winding of three phase transformer in Delta
configuration as shown in above figure
3) Apply three phase AC source to primary side of transformer up to rated
value.
4) By using voltmeter measure the secondary voltage.
5) Phase shift will be analysed by using CRO, set the CRO on dual channel
and connect simultaneously the probes on primary side as well as on
secondary side. According to both winding configuration you will get the
phase shift or in phase voltage waveforms.
6) Repeat the above steps by setting primary side and secondary side in the
following configuration/pattern
 Delta-Delta (Dd0)
 Star-Delta (Yd11)
 Delta-Star (Dyn11)
 Star-Star (Yy0)
By keeping following points in consideration:
 Three single phase Units use to develop three Phase Transformer (Star
& Delta)
 Above will be implemented in Software as well as in Hardware
 Three phase sources will be developed by using three units of single
phase sources in software (MATLAB/Simulink or any other)

7) After analysing the phase shift, draw the waveforms for each
configuration as mentioned above.
