ABOUT ME
ANTI-GLASSHOUSE

During this group project, I focused on the ecological and botanical context
of each “invasive” plant species and took responsibility for developing the
narrative concept and agenda of the project.

The narrative foundation begins with a reexamination of the origin of botanical

glasshouses and how they came to “house” “foreign” plant species. This
includes their curation, their existence, and the interactions visitors have with
them.

Recognizing that many plant species were transported overseas as “exotic

specimens” to be viewed curiously by colonizing nations, with several unkind
connotations associated with this practice, the term “invasive” itself carries a
manipulative bias. Within the botanical industry, there is an ongoing debate
about whether these highly competitive species should even be controlled in
their new habitats at all.

As part of the project, I introduced a new glossary of appropriate terms for

identification, with a crucial change being the rephrasing of “invasive plant
species” to “non-native competitive species.”

I conducted an in-depth study of the four non-native competitive species

on the site to discover methods for maintaining the soft boundaries of their
spread. I also explored intriguing human interactions that could be mindful
and deliberate experiences, all of which are remarkably enriching.

The methods of containment were communicated and implemented through

the design of the architectural intervention. Additionally, the opportunities
for experiencing these species were illustrated as follows: Gunnera tinctoria,
Impatiens glandulifera, Rhododendron ponticum, and Lysichitons americanus.

POCKET MARINA

During this group project, our team of three looked at creating a public
invervention at a small pier of Brighton Beach. We looked at the human impact
of marine ecology from waste dumping and bio-repellent architecture.

The depleting ecology itself removes the water filteration system that a healthy
ecosystem provides. Thus we proposed a bio-receptive structure informally
reffered to as “Hard Sponge”. It was partially inspired by naturally occurring
rockpools as well as observations of marine food chains to find physiologies
that trigger natural ecologies.

While I was involved in progressing the design iterations of the overall project,
on of the key aspects I focused on was the concept, study and design of a
single bio-receptive “pocket” that is attachable to a pre-existing architectural
facade at the site. This included morphology details at this scale as well as
water movement studies against this form.

Other points of developments lead by myself include some bacterial studies

to explore incorporation of bioremediation, and developing an engineered
system of water filteration as several stages using chambers with different
treatment facilities.

ATTACK OF THE STAIR

This project asked for a staircase study and an experiential intervention. In a

small group, we conducted a site survey and documented a choreography of
Taekwondo to the song “Jaguar” by “What So Not”.

Independantly, I explored the movements of the choreography as a violent

attacks as an experience and also the spaces created and blocked for a
fellow dweller. To re-simulated these attacks as architectural abstractions of
the choreography, the dweller would engage in a sense of discomfort and
defensiveness through the path. (A slight parallel may be seen in experiencing
dread and horror in a simulated haunted house)

This project explored the physical intervention, use of dark versus light, and the
beats of the music.

MEDITATION HOME

To create this makerspace, I chose to study and design for a traditional

Paubha/Thangka Artist. This home is designed for peaceful solitary dwelling.

This craft is deeply entangled in spirituality and Buddhism; this project took on
a minimalist style that focused on creating peaceful spaces in every corner and
additionally ensuring that every interior “room” would directly be accessible to
open-air spaces that could serve as garden segments.

The levels also fuction independantly; public, work, private.

PHOTOGRAPHY

As a visual artist, photography is another passion I have cultivated over a

decade. Often the perspective and intent of a snapshot is equally as important
as the subject(s) in it. It is another method of storytelling.
