CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In a world where environmental awareness is on the rise, a solar-powered battery

charger with integrated impact driver sets new benchmarks in environmentally friendly

technologies. Solar-powered impact driver is the marriage of two systems that have been

shown to have an enormous independent impact, but have rarely been used together in a

well-documented fashion. It is an extremely efficient mechanism for delivering electricity

directly to the battery of the impact driver. It increases yields and allows for the

introduction of new (potentially high-value) impact drivers in regions where they could

not be sustained by electricity lines alone. Solar-powered impact drivers save potentially

hours of labor daily in rural off-grid areas where electricity is out and work is

traditionally done by hand. They are durable and immune to a brownout, and in the

medium- to long-term cost less than traditional impact drivers (Kohle et. al., 2002). When

used in tandem, these technologies allow for the production of the market, providing a

much-needed source of both income and electricity.

Additionally, solar-powered battery chargers are devices that utilize solar

radiation to create electricity to charge different kinds of electronic devices, including

reading lights, laptops, cell phones, and personal fans. The best thing about these solar-

powered battery chargers is their portability. Thus, they can be used anywhere and at any

time (Admin Solar, 2022).

From a technical standpoint, solar-powered impact drivers make an ideal pairing.

First, impact driver applications in the developing world have been widely used. Solar-

powered impact drivers provide a low-maintenance, long-term solution. Additionally,

they can be used together in a direct-power system (no batteries) because solar radiation

(which governs the impact drive) is also the main source of power for the impact driver

(how much electricity it needs). Thus, the solar-powered impact driver while training is

necessary for use and maintenance, the systems are simple to operate and repair.

The design and development of a solar-powered battery charger with integrated

impact driver is an innovative solution that combines the benefits of solar power

generation and battery charging in a compact and portable device.

The design phase involves careful consideration of various factors such as the

efficiency of solar cells, battery compatibility, and overall product usability. The charger

needs to be compact and lightweight, allowing for easy portability without compromising

on power output. Additionally, the design should incorporate adequate protection

mechanisms to safeguard the batteries from overcharging or short circuits. Over and

above that, development involves integrating solar panels, power management circuitry,

and advanced control systems to optimize energy conversion.

The creation of a solar-powered battery charger with an integrated impact driver

is the main goal of this project. It differs from previous research, which mostly focus on

impact drivers or independent solar chargers, with its unique method. The study proposes

to develop a more effective, environmentally friendly, and adaptable solution for a range

two features into a single device. Along with this, the researchers’ inspiration of creating

a solar-powered battery charger is to provide people with a portable, eco-friendly, and

self-sufficient power source by integrating solar power.

Over and above that, the primary objective of this project byis to harness solar

energy and convert it into electrical power that can be used to charge different types of

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies and the

conceptual model of the study.

Related Literature

The solar-powered battery charger industry has been plagued by companies mass-

producing low-efficiency solar-powered battery chargers that don't meet the consumer's

expectations. This in turn has made it hard for new solar-powered battery charger

companies to gain the trust of consumers. Solar companies are starting to offer high-

efficiency solar chargers (H. Fathabadi, 2018).

Portable solar apparatus is being utilized in developing countries to power

lighting as opposed to utilizing kerosene lamps which are responsible for respiratory

infections, lung and throat cancers, serious eye infections, cataracts as well as low birth

weights. Solar power provides an opportunity for rural areas to "leapfrog" traditional grid

infrastructure and move directly to distributed energy solutions.

Some solar-powered battery chargers also have an on-board battery which is

charged by the solar panel when not charging anything else. This allows the user to be

able to use the solar energy stored in the battery to charge their electronic devices at night

or when indoors.

Solar-powered battery chargers can also be rollable or flexible and are manufactured

using thin-film PV technology. Rollable solar chargers may include Li-ion batteries.

Furthermore, the battery is one of the essential parts of a photovoltaic system as it

works as an auxiliary source. Battery management systems have been significant research

interest where the overall health of the battery, charging, and discharging of the battery

has been studied. Some of the widely used batteries are lead acid batteries, lithium-ion

batteries, Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH), and Nickel-iron

batteries (Y. C. Chuang, 2017).

As cited by S. Chiang H. (2017), battery management system has been significant

research interest where the overall health of the battery, charging, and discharging of the

battery has been studied. Some of the widely used batteries are lead acid batteries,

lithium-ion batteries, Nickel-cadmium (NiCd), Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH), and

Nickel-iron batteries. In the battery management system, a switched-mode power

converter is used to charge the battery. Boost converter and other step-up converter

topologies are used when the voltage of the battery is higher than the voltage of the PV

panel.

To extract maximum power from the PV cell under different weather conditions,

the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is used. A battery is an

electrochemical device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy through an

electrochemical oxidation process (Kumsuwan, 2016).

According to S. Ketsingsoi (2014), a photovoltaic (PV) system is one of the most

reliable, efficient, and economical renewable energy systems used worldwide. This

system has a long life, low maintenance cost, and is free of pollution. Photovoltaic

generation system is widely used in stand-alone grid-tied or hybrid systems. The V-I and

P-I characteristics of PV cells are nonlinear and the electrical energy generated from the

PV cell is dependent on solar insolation and ambient temperature.

Local Studies

Recent years have seen a notable increase in interest in the topic of renewable

energy, particularly in the Philippines where a variety of energy resources are available.

One of the most prevalent renewable energy sources in the Philippines, according to a

Department of Energy research, is solar energy (DOE, 2019). Because of this, scientists

have been looking at ways to use this energy for different purposes. The creation of a

solar-powered battery charger with an integrated impact driver is one example of such an

application. The goal of this creative gadget is to use solar energy to power an impact

driver and charge batteries, which can be helpful in a variety of industries like

manufacturing, construction, and automobiles.

The Technological Institute of the Philippines conducted additional study to

investigate how to best optimize a solar-powered battery charger that also included an

integrated impact driver (Galvez et al., 2018). The goal of the study was to use advanced

control algorithms to increase the device's efficiency. By putting these methods into

practice, the researchers discovered that the solar-powered battery charger performed

noticeably better and was therefore more appropriate for a wider range of uses. In order

to fulfill the growing need for efficient and sustainable energy solutions, this research

highlights the significance of ongoing innovation and advancement in the field of

renewable energy.

Moreover, numerous research initiatives in the Philippines have focused on the

creation of this solar-powered battery charger with integrated impact driver. The viability

of powering an impact driver and a battery charger concurrently with solar energy was

examined in a noteworthy study conducted by the University of the Philippines Diliman

(Panganiban et al., 2017). The study team created a prototype to show off the

technology’s potential to lower consumer expenses and energy consumption.

Additionally, they emphasized how solar energy reduces greenhouse gas emissions,

which is good for the environment.
