1 Relations and Functions

Relation
-can be represented by ordered pairs, words, equations, tables and graphs
-is a rule that associates each element x in a set X with one or more element(s) y in a set Y
Ex1: Relation in the format of ordered pairs and TOV
Set P is a collection of points: P = {(1, 1) (2, 2) (3, 3)}
X Y

Domain

Range

Function (Special relation)

-A rule that associates only one x element of the domain (Set X) for one y element of the range (Set Y)
So, what is the difference between a relation and a function?
Ex2: Determine whether the followings are functions or relations.
Set X Set Y Set X Set Y Set X Set Y

1 1 1 1 1 1
2 2 2 2 2 2
3 3 3 3 3 3
