The Drug Scenario in the Philippines

In the Philippines, a nation known for its culture and
warm hospitality, there exists a complex and challenging issue –
substance use and abuse and (treat or use in a very mean, unfair
way).
At the heart of the matter is the prevalence of commonly
abused substances, with alcohol and tobacco leading the list.
Despite efforts to regulate and control their consumption, these
substances remain deeply established in social gatherings,
celebrations, and everyday life. The cultural acceptance of these
substances often blurs the lines between moderate use and
abuse, making it a subtle yet persistent challenge.
Beyond alcohol and tobacco, the Philippines faces the
rising tide of illegal drugs. The government has waged a
continuous battle against the production, distribution, and use
of narcotics, but the fight is far from over. Methamphetamine,
locally known as "shabu," stands out as a particularly potent and
destructive force. The social and economic consequences of drug
abuse ripple through society, leaving scars that are not easily
healed.
One factor contributing to the issue is the prevalence of
poverty in certain regions. Limited access to education,
employment opportunities, and basic healthcare add to the
vulnerability of individuals to substance abuse. In turn,
substance abuse can continue the cycle of poverty, creating a
destructive feedback loop that is difficult to break.
In response to these challenges, various government and
non-governmental organizations have initiated campaigns to
raise awareness, provide education, and offer rehabilitation
services. Community-based programs aim to address the root
causes of substance abuse, offering support to individuals and
families struggling with addiction. The path towards recovery
involves not only breaking the physical dependency but also
addressing the underlying social and economic factors that
contribute to substance abuse.

Comprehension Questions:
1. What is substance use and abuse?
2. What are the substances that are commonly abused by the
Filipinos?
3. How do cultural factors contribute to the perception of
substance use in the Philippines?
4. What is the most contributing factor leading to abuse of
substances?
