Annotating Text

Annotating text is like adding special notes and

marks on the text to help you remember
important things or understand difficult parts.
Annotation is a way to make reading more
interactive and fun. It helps you engage with the
text and understand it better.

Here is how to actively engage with

the text as you read:

Annotation Codes:
Use symbols to ✩= this seems important
help you ? = this is confusing to me
! = this surprises me
remember your __underline = keyword or info
thoughts as ✓= I agree
you read 🚫= I disagree
M= main idea
E= evidence
C= this connects to something else
word = unfamiliar vocabulary

Use a highlighter or different colored pens

to make the important parts stand out

Write notes in the margins of the page or on

Post-Its. These notes can be like little
reminders to help you remember something
or to explain a confusing part of the text. It's
like having a conversation with the book by
writing down your thoughts or questions.
