18. Describe a story about space (real or fictitious) that you have read about
or seen in a film or on TV
I would like to tell a story about space from a movie I just watched last
weekend. It was not a blockbuster or anything, just a random sci-fi
movie I found online. The movie is set in the future, revolving around a
group of people – astronauts, scientists, and engineers – going on
a .mission to harness the Sun. In the year 3000, planet Earth will run out
of energy, the planetary sources are no longer sufficient to meet the
demand of humans activities, and our next and only remaining source of
energy is the Sun. So basically, the plan is to build a megastructure that
encompasses the whole star to capture its power output. This seems
impossible, yet it is the last hope for mankind before our planet becomes
drained.
The crew set out on their journey to Mercury – the closest planet to the
Sun and therefore is the base of this project. After enormous efforts
under severe conditions and pressure, both literally and figuratively, they
managed to fulfill the mission of building the largest and most ambitious
structure in the universe. This huge technological leap has made
unbelievable change in our energy budget, enabling the transition of
humankind from a planetary species to an interstellar species, as well as
ushering in an era of space exploration and expansion on a scale that we
can barely imagine.
The movie was not a Hollywood bomb with special visual effects, but
it got something to itself that I couldn’t take my eyes off. It has pictured
a potential scenario of our planet’s future, in which our descendants have
to deal with the consequences left behind by their ancestors’ wasteful
energy consumption, showing a message about the power of unity,
determination, and intelligence when the doomsday is waiting ahead.
Also, there’s a surprising fact that this movie was based on an actual
scientific hypothesis, in which the mentioned megastructure has an
official name – the Dyson Sphere. It is not just a fantasy made out of
imagination, but it can really happen, based on Physics alone, although
in a very far future. If human can build such a machine with the scope of
a star, the only limitation left will be our own imagination.
I am still filled with thrill and amazement even when the movie has
ended. It will remain on my top favorite list for a long time.
20. Describe a complaint you made and you were satisfied with the result
I would like to share with you a time when I made a complaint and
was satisfied with the result.
It was a few months ago when I had ordered a product online, and it
arrived damaged.
I was disappointed and frustrated because I had paid a lot of money for
it. I decided to contact the customer service team and explain the
situation. They were very understanding and helpful, and they offered to
send me a replacement product free of charge. I was impressed by their
prompt and courteous response. As the saying goes, “The squeaky wheel
gets the grease,” and it’s important to speak up when we have a
legitimate complaint. It’s also important to remain polite and respectful
when making a complaint, as this can help to resolve the issue more
quickly and efficiently.
This experience taught me the importance of customer service and the
value of speaking up when something goes wrong. It’s important for
companies to listen to their customers and take their complaints
seriously, as this can help to build trust and loyalty.
In conclusion, I was satisfied with the result of my complaint because
the customer service team took my concerns seriously and offered a
prompt and satisfactory solution. It’s important to remember that making
a complaint can lead to positive change and improvement, both for
ourselves and for others.
26. Describe a time someone gave you a gift that you really wanted
Getting gifts is always a pleasant experience, but getting something
that you really want is an entirely different feeling. I remember the day
when my cousin gave me a gift that I had been longing for a long time. It
was a beautiful pink mechanical keyboard that I had my eyes on for
months. I couldn't believe it when I saw it in front of me. My cousin had
given it to me as a gift to congratulate me on my university entrance
exam.
Before receiving the gift, I had been saving up for the keyboard, but it
was still out of my budget. Little did I know that my cousin had been
keeping a close watch on me and my wishes. So, when my cousin found
out that I had been accepted into my dream university, he wasted no time
in surprising me with the keyboard. He picked me up from my house and
drove us to the store where we got it.
When I opened the package, I was over the moon with this sweet
surprise gift. It was the perfect present for me as I had been searching for
a new mechanical keyboard for a long time. I started using it
immediately, and it was extremely convenient and suited my needs
perfectly. I always feel comfortable using it when I work or study.
Moreover, it made me feel more productive and motivated. Every time I
typed on it, I remembered my cousin's kindness and how he went out of
his way to make me happy.
What made this gift special was the thought behind it. It was not just a
keyboard; it was a symbol of my cousin's affection and support for me.
He may come across as strict and cold sometimes, but he cares deeply
about me and my future. Receiving this gift made me feel contented and
proud.
In conclusion, receiving this gift was a heartwarming experience that I
will never forget. It showed me the importance of the people who love
and support me in my life, and how they can make a significant impact
on my happiness. I still use the keyboard to this day, and every time I do,
I think of my cousin and how grateful I am to have him in my life.
32. Do you think that children should be taught to read paper maps at school
33. Why do you think some people have better memory thanothers
The reasons why some people have better memory than others are
multifaceted and can vary from person to person. However, some factors
that may contribute to differences in memory ability include genetics,
lifestyle choices, and environmental factors. First of all, genetics play a
role in determining memory capacity. Studies have shown that genes can
influence different aspects of memory, including verbal and spatial
memory. Some individuals may inherit genetic variations that enhance
their memory abilities, while others may inherit genetic variations that
impair their memory function. Lifestyle choices can also affect memory
function. For example, research has shown that chronic stress, lack of
sleep, and poor nutrition can impair memory function over time. In
contrast, engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and
getting adequate sleep can support healthy brain function and improve
memory. Finally, environmental factors such as education, occupation,
and social engagement influence memory function a lot. Research has
shown that individuals who engage in mentally stimulating activities,
such as reading, writing, and playing games, have better memory function
in later life. Additionally, individuals who have high levels of social
engagement and support may have better memory function due to
reduced stress and improved mental well-being.
41. What do you think are some of the differences between working
outdoors compared to working in an office
If you’re always indoors then you’ll get weak and sick easier; whereas
if you work outside then you’re getting fresh air sunshine, which are two
things that everyone needs to stay healthy. If you’re working outdoors,
then you’ll probably be much more physically fit and a whole lot
stronger than if you’re sitting at your desk all day. Of course, if you don’t
have a balanced life then you’re bound to have complications, and if you
don’t spend at least a few hours on your computer every day you might
not be also to sleep at night.
43. Do you think we pollute more now than we did fifty years ago
Well, yes, overall. I’d say, though, that richer countries pollute less
themselves but export their pollution elsewhere, by which I mean that
they consume foreign product that have a large carbon footprint. It has
become fashionable to be green in wealthier nations, especially Western
ones, so people make an effort to cycle to work and recycle their waste.
However, it’s quite a shallow attempt at being green, in my opinion,
because they still live in big houses using lots of energy and go on
holidays abroad, leaving a trail of pollution in their wake.
44. Is there much more environmetal damage now than in the past
Yes, there has certainly been an increase in environmental pollution
over time. There has been a significant increase in pollution and waste
production due to the industrialization of civilization and the expansion
of international trade. The ecosystem has suffered as a result, leading to
issues like climate change, deforestation, and water shortages.
45. Do you think the city is cleaner or dirtier than the countryside
Of course, the cities are more polluted and dirtier than the country.
There are many reasons for that, but probably the main one is the high
population and the concentration of industry in the cities. Many people
moving to cities means high demand for jobs, products, and services, and
making all of those requires a ton of resources and energy to create. That
causes pollution.
The countryside is cleaner mainly because there are fewer people, less
industry, and less transportation over there. What's more, people in the
countryside tend to care more about the environment and their
surroundings, while people in cities tend to be a bit more selfish and care
mostly about themselves, carrying on with their lives.
