SHADOWBOX - Criterion B Design Notebook

Shadowbox Design Specs:

1. Overall size 5" x 5" x 3" deep
2. Must show a scene in 1-pt perspective with clear foreground, midground and background
communicating a sense of depth
3. Must make use of 4 - 6 opaque laser cut layers, evenly separated by spacers
4. A minimum of 70% of the foreground layer must be open
5. Must be lit from the interior of the box
6. Box must be neatly assembled and freestanding

[optional] A partially translucent back "screen" paper can be used to diffuse the light. It would be glued
to the back of the last opaque cut layer.

Task 5 - Generating 3 Ideas

For each one show:
1. Use colour pencil to indicate what is seen from the different layers if they were stacked up (like
you did for the bear in Task 1)
2. Create a legend to indicate foreground, near midground, far midground, background, distance
etc.
3. Use arrows to show where you would be placing the lights. You can include a back "screen"
paper or apply lighting around the sides of the frame
4. Show any hidden windows in midground & background layers to let light seep through to
reach foreground layers. Keep them low so they don't show & add these as shapes.
Add clear photos of your ideas in the boxes below

ii. presents a range of feasible design ideas, using an appropriate medium(s) and annotation, which can be correctly interpreted by others

Task 6 - Choosing 1 design & comparing it to the specs

Which is the best design & why? --> Choose the BEST design idea and evaluate it against each of the
design specs. Give your evidence for each answer in your design notebook.

CRITERION B [SUMMATIVE]
iii. presents the chosen design and outlines the reasons for its selection with reference to the design specification

I am choosing idea #3

Specification Yes My Evidence

/ No

Overall size 5" x 5" x 3" deep (is no I split my paper so that there are 4 equal parts. These 4
drawing square?) parts are all rectangles. There was 1 rectangle that I
made for my legend, while the rest 3 were made for my
drawings. For the rectangle for my drawing, the
measurements were 7 in by 8.5 in

1-pt perspective with clear yes There is 1 point of perspective. To show this, I created a
foreground, midground and legend to show the different layers. It is very clear
background communicating a sense because this shows there are many layers. Something
of depth else I did to make it look clear is making the
buildings/stuff in the back look much smaller.

Make use of 4 - 6 opaque laser cut yes In this rough copy I have 4 different layers. The more
layers, evenly separated by spacers the things are to the back, the smaller I will make them.
In this example it would be the buildings in the back or
even the clouds.
A minimum of 70% of the Yes In the front, I have this giant spiderman climbing the
foreground layer must be open building. This will take up at least 70% of my space for
my box.

Be lit from the interior of the box Yes I will create some holes in/around this box. The holes
(lighting shown?) will make the light go through it.

[optional] A partially translucent back Yes I would like to add a screen in the back of my box.
"screen" paper can be used to
diffuse the light. This can also be cut
or perforated.

Task 7 - Create planning diagrams

What will be the general plan for each layer of your chosen design? Draw them out using pencil
on the paper layer outlines provided.
1. Label and draw out the general plan for each layer (this does not have to be perfect, vector
shapes can be borrowed or made in Illustrator)
2. Mark where fairy lights will be placed with ⭐️
3. Colour the back of the box or [optional] back "screen" paper yellow to show where the main
light source is
● [optional] Include hidden openings where light will flow through background & midground
layers
