CAT4 Practice Paper: Part 2

Read the following with your child:

This is a multiple-choice paper in which you have to mark your answer to each
question on the separate answer sheet. You should mark only one answer for
each question.

Draw a firm line clearly through the rectangle next to your answer like this:
If you make a mistake, rub it out as completely as you can and put in your new
answer.

There are three parts in a CAT4 practice paper. This is Part 2. You will see an
explanation of what to do, followed by a worked example and two practice
questions. Solutions to the example and practice questions are provided

Be sure to keep your place in the correct section on the answer sheet. Mark
your answer in the box that has the same number as the question in the
booklet.

You may find some of the questions difficult. If you cannot do a question, do
not waste time on it but go on to the next. If you are not sure of an answer,
choose the one you think is best.

Work as quickly and as carefully as you can.

Verbal Analogies

In these questions, you must select one word that will complete the analogy in
the best way.

Mark the word on the answer sheet.

Example old -> age : tall ->

A short B height C giant D metres E weight

Answer height

Solution The completed analogy is: ‘old’ is to age as ‘tall’ is to height. This is
because the the second word in the pair is the category for the first.
For other questions, the word relationship may be different (pay
attention to word type as well as meaning) but the important thing
to remember is that the relationship between the first pair of words
is always the same as between the second pair of words.

Number Analogies

In these questions, the pairs of numbers are related in the same way.

Find the number that completes the last group and mark it on the answer
sheet.

Example [ 4 -> 8 ] [ 3 -> 6 ] [ 6 -> ? ]

A3 B6 C 12 D 14 E 18

Answer 12

Solution In the first two groups, the first number is multiplied by 2 to make
the second number, i.e. 4 x 2 = 8 and 3 x 2 = 6. Therefore, the final
group can be completed in the same way, 6 x 2 = 12.

P1 [ 7 -> 15 ] [ 32 -> 40 ] [ 55 -> ? ]

A 60 B 63 C 66 D 70 E 72

The second number is the sum of the first number and 8.

P2 [ 2 -> 6 ] [ 5 -> 10 ] [ 10 -> ? ]

A 20 B 30 C 40 D 50 E 60

The second number is the first number multiplied by 2.

CAT4 Part 2

Parents’ Guide

About this test

This is a multiple-choice paper designed to familiarise your child with the types of questions
they will see in a CAT4 test.

There are 168 questions in the full test. This practice paper is Part 2 and has 63 questions
which gradually increase in difficulty. It covers verbal classification, verbal analogies and
number analogies.

What you’ll need

Printed question booklet and answer shee
Penci
Rubbe
Scrap pape
Timer

How to prepare
Your child should take the test at a time when they feel alert. Choose a quiet area where they
can work comfortably without distractions.

Talk with your child about the reasons for taking the practice test. Explain that the structure of
the paper is similar to the one they will see in the real CAT4. The questions will help them know
what to expect on exam day.

Explain that they might find some of the questions difficult. They should work as quickly and
carefully as possible.

If they get stuck on a question, they should move on to the next one. If they have time left over
at the end, they can go back to any skipped questions. If they have more time left over, they
should check their answers.

CAT4 Part 2

Parents’ Guide

Taking the test

Dictionaries are not allowed. Give your child a scrap sheet of paper and encourage them to use
it for any rough working out.

Your child should mark their answers on the Answer Sheet, not in the test booklet.

On the Answer Sheet, your child should record their answers by drawing a clear line through
the answer box with a pencil. Mistakes should be rubbed out and not crossed out.

Timing
It’s helpful for children to get comfortable with taking tests under timed conditions. This paper
is Part 2 and has a time limit of 26 minutes. Your child should spend 8 minutes on Verbal
Classification, 8 minutes on Verbal Analogies and 10 minutes on Number Analogies. Only start
timing when they have finished reading the instructions.

If they haven’t finished the test after 26 minutes, circle the question they got to, then let them
carry on. When you mark the test you’ll be able to see how many questions they got right in 26
minutes and how many overall. This will show you whether your child needs to work on their
speed, accuracy, or both.

Marking
You can find the answers on the Answer Key. Give your child one mark for each correct answer
(no half-marks are available in the real test!). Do not take marks off for wrong answers.

Take time to discuss your child’s results in a positive and encouraging way. Work through the
corrections, what they would do differently next time, and pick out key areas to revise next.
