PROJECT TITLE: BIOMEDICAL WASTE SEPARATOR
PROJECT DOMAIN AREA: BIOMEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT
PROBLEM STATEMENT WITH DEFINITION:
The challenge of waste segregation is a significant issue commonly encountered in
healthcare settings. On occasion, even medical professionals may experience
confusion during the specific process of segregating waste, leading to the inadvertent
mixing of biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials. This improper segregation
complicates the waste degradation process and potentially leads to adverse
environmental impacts.

ABSTRACT:

This particular challenge can be adeptly tackled through the deployment of an

advanced automated waste segregation system. This innovative system is specifically
designed to identify and categorize various waste materials precisely at the point of
their disposal. Central to this system is a highly sophisticated separation process,
which meticulously categorizes waste based on its unique compositional
characteristics. This is particularly pertinent in the realm of medical waste
management, where waste is typically classified into five key categories:
biodegradable, non-biodegradable, metallic, plastic, and glass. The process of
distinguishing biodegradable waste from its non-biodegradable counterpart is executed
through a meticulous moisture analysis technique. This technique involves a detailed
assessment of the water content present in the waste, a step that is of paramount
importance. The reason for this is that the level of moisture in waste directly
influences the handling and processing methods that are best suited for each category,
thereby ensuring appropriate and safe disposal practices. Conversely, the identification
of metallic and glass waste types employs a combined approach involving both metal
detection and infrared (IR) sensing technologies. These technologies are exceptionally
effective in differentiating between the various waste types. Their precision ensures
that the segregation process is both accurate and reliable. The introduction of this
automated segregation system revolutionizes the efficiency of medical waste
management. It significantly diminishes the likelihood of contamination, thereby
safeguarding public health. Moreover, it streamlines the recycling process, making it
more effective and environmentally friendly. This system not only assists waste
management professionals in making well-informed decisions regarding the disposal
and treatment of diverse waste types but also markedly enhances the environmental
sustainability practices within healthcare facilities. In essence, this technological
advancement plays a critical role in fostering a more sustainable and health-conscious
approach to waste management in medical settings.
