ASSIGNMENT BASED ON ALTERNATING CURRENT-II
Q.1 In the following circuit, calculate (a) the capacitance of the capacitor, if the power factor
of the circuit is unity, (b) the Q-factor of this circuit, (c) Given the angular frequency of
the a.c. source to be 100/s.
Calculate the average power dissipated in the circuit.
Q.2. An alternating voltage & =200 sin 300 t is applied across a series combination of
R = 10 Ω and an inductor of 800 mH. Calculate: (i) impedance of the circuit (ii) peak
value of current in the circuit (iii) power factor of the circuit.
Q.3 A circuit draws a power of 550 W from a source of220 V, 50 Hz. The power factor of the
circuit is 0.8. The current in the circuit lags behind the voltage. Show that a capacitor
1
of about × 10-2 F will have to be connected to bring its power factor to unity.

Q.4 A series LCR circuit is made by taking R = 100 Ω, L = H, C = μ F. This series
5 π
combination is connected across an a.c. source of 220 V, 50 Hz. Calculate (i) the
impedance of the circuit and (ii) the peak value of current flowing in the circuit. Calculate
the power factor of this circuit and compare this value with the one at its resonant
frequency.
Q.5 For circuits used for transporting electric power, a low power factor implies large power
loss in transmission. Explain.
Q.6 Power factor can often be improved by the use of a capacitor of appropriate
capacitance
in the circuit. Explain.
Q.7 Prove that high frequency a.c. can pass through a pure capacitor easily but not
through a pure inductor.
Q.10 Obtain the resonant frequency ω;. of a series LCR-circuit with L=2.0H, C = 32 μ f and
R = 10 Ω. What is the Q-value of the circuit?
