What is Professional Social Work?


 Are there any differences in between Social work and Social
Services?
 Combination of two words social + work = work for people,
for groups, for communities, for societies; in overall for
humanity.
 Sharing culture for there better after life (punnya) or for good
life of theirs and their family members.
 Generosity, love or philanthropy.
 Over all, services for good for all.
 Because of social changes and development along with the
need of the human individuals.
 Paradigm(world view) of social work got shifted from
charitable work to Professional work

 However, the root of professional social work are generosity,


love and benevolence.
 A profession focused to improve the quality of life of an
individual.
 A profession focused to improve the capacity of those who are
in need and are not being able to adjust in the environment.
 According to the NASW, “Social work is the professional
activity of helping individual, group or communities to
enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and
creating societal condition favorable to these goal.”
 According to the IFSW, “Social work is a practice-based
profession and an academic discipline that promotes social
change and development, social cohesion, and the
empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social
justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect
for diversities are central to social work. Underpinned by
theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and
indigenous knowledge, social work engages people and
structures to address life challenges and enhance
wellbeing.”
- In simple ways:

- It is a Professional service which includes specialized


knowledge and skills for dealing with human behaviours.
- SW is an activity by which individuals’ and social problems
are solved by applying different methods and techniques.
- It not only solve the problems but also prevents its
occurrence
 To conclude,
- Social Work is a profession which provides those services
which help in reliving distress, preventing suffering,
removing social injustice and provide opportunities for social
development.
 Pursuit of justices
 Enhancement of quality of life
 The development of full potential of life
 The primary mission of social work is to enhance human
well-being and help meet the basic human needs of the
people.
 Empower people who are vulnerable, oppressed and living
in poverty. - (NASW, 2008)

(National Association of Social Work/er (NASW) got estd. in 1955 in US


and got amended multiple times for multiple purposes.)
- (Founded in 1952, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is the national association representing social
work education in the United States. Its members include over 750 accredited baccalaureate and master’s
degree social work programs, as well as individual social work educators, practitioners, and agencies
dedicated to advancing quality social work education.)
- The promotion, restoration, maintenance and enhancement of
the functioning of individuals, families, groups, organizations
and communities by helping them to accomplish tasks,
prevent and alleviate distress and use resources.
 To involve in planning, formulating and implementing of
social policies, services, resources and programs needed to
meet basic human needs and support the development of
human capacities.
 To Work to create policies, services, and programs through
advocacy and action to help at-risk groups and make society
more fair and just.
 To develop and apply professional knowledge and skills
related to these purpose.
