Full marks are not necessarily awarded for a correct answer with no working. Answers
must be supported by working and/or explanations. Solutions found from a graphic display
calculator should be supported by suitable working. For example, if graphs are used to find
a solution, you should sketch these as part of your answer. Where an answer is incorrect,
some marks may be given for a correct method, provided this is shown by written working.
You are therefore advised to show all working.

Section A

Answer all questions. Answers must be written within the answer boxes provided. Working
may be continued below the lines, if necessary.

1. [Maximum mark: 6]

John takes medication. After 𝑡 minutes, the concentration of medication left in his
bloodstream is given by 𝐴(𝑡) = 10 (0.5)0.014𝑡 , where 𝐴 is in milligrams per litre.

a) Write down 𝐴(0). [1]

b) Find the concentration of medication left in his bloodstream after

50 minutes. [2]

c) At 13:00, when there is no medication in John’s bloodstream, he takes his

first dose of medication. He can take his medication again when the
concentration of medication reaches 0.395 milligrams per litre. What time
will John be able to take his medication again? [3]

Two submarines A and B have their routes planned so that their positions at
time 𝑡 hours, 0 ≤ 𝑡 < 20, would be defined by the position vectors
2 −1 0 −0.5
𝑟𝐴 = ( 4 ) + 𝑡 ( 1 ) and 𝑟𝐵 = (3.2) + 𝑡 ( 1.2 ) relative to a fixed point on
−1 −0.15 −2 0.1
the surface of the ocean (all lengths are in kilometres).

a) Show that the two submarines would collide at a point P and write down
the coordinates of P. [4]

To avoid the collision submarine B adjusts its velocity so that its position vector
0 −0.45
is now given by 𝑟𝐵 = (3.2) + 𝑡 ( 1.08 ).
−2 0.09

b) (i) Show that submarine B travels in the same direction as originally

planned.

(ii) Find the value of 𝑡 when submarine B passes through P. [3]

c) Find an expression for the distance between the two submarines in

terms of 𝑡. [5]
