Answer all questions in the answer booklet provided. Please start each question on a new
page. Full marks are not necessarily awarded for a correct answer with no working.
Answers must be supported by working and/or explanations. Solutions found from a
graphic display calculator should be supported by suitable working. For example, if graphs
are used to find a solution, you should sketch these as part of your answer. Where an
answer is incorrect, some marks may be given for a correct method, provided this is
shown by written working. You are therefore advised to show all working.

1. [Maximum mark: 23]

This question asks you to investigate the roots of a polynomial.

𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 3 + 𝑏𝑥 2 + 𝑐𝑥 + 𝑑 = 0 has roots 𝛼, 𝛽, 𝛾.

Let 𝑆𝑛 = 𝛼 𝑛 + 𝛽 𝑛 + 𝛾 𝑛 .

a) Factorise 𝑎𝑥 3 + 𝑏𝑥 2 + 𝑐𝑥 + 𝑑, then expand your result with 𝛼, 𝛽, 𝛾. [3]

b) (i) Show that 𝑆1 𝑎 + 𝑏 = 0.

(ii) By expanding (𝛼 + 𝛽 + 𝛾)2, or otherwise, show that 𝑆2 𝑎 + 𝑆1 𝑏 + 2𝑐 = 0.

(iii) By considering 𝛼 𝑛−3 𝑓(𝛼), 𝛽 𝑛−3 𝑓(𝛽), 𝛾 𝑛−3 𝑓(𝛾), or otherwise, show that
𝑆𝑛 𝑎 + 𝑆𝑛−1 𝑏 + 𝑆𝑛−2 𝑐 + 𝑆𝑛−3 𝑑 = 0. [7]

Now you are given that 𝑥 3 − 𝑥 + 𝑑 = 0, 𝑑 ≠ 0, has roots 𝛼, 𝛽, 𝛾.

c) Find the value of:

(i) 𝛼+𝛽+𝛾

(ii) 𝛼 2 + 𝛽2 + 𝛾 2

(iii) 𝛼 3 + 𝛽3 + 𝛾 3

(iv) +𝛽+𝛾

d) Find an equation with roots 𝛼 + 𝛽, 𝛽 + 𝛾, 𝛼 + 𝛾. [4]
