Why
have you applied or expressed interest in a particular campus, school, college, program, and or area of

additional areas of study or campuses. We want to understand - Why NYU? (400 word maximum)*

As I walk through Old Lahore, I see the Havelis (houses) that line reflecting charm not just of the
architecture but the aesthetic in their colors. Old Lahore is a treasure trove of history, taking me back
into the past with every step. It is in these alleyways, when there’s a religious festival, the Shrines and
Mosques hung with fairy lights present their own form of art. Our ancestors, perhaps thought of this
when creating the magnificent Sheesh Mahal in Lahore where you can see your reflection in the millions
of tiny mirrors forming fascinating patterns on the wall.
To me, Art History is the way in which one can bring the past back to life through aesthetics of culture, be
they in jugs procured from a lost civilization or the upholding of the rights of minorities to feel cherished
within their own country.
The diversity of thought and intellectual inquiry at NYU will allow me to learn the genealogy of Art, both
visual and physical, and its use as a tool for political reform. Studying South Asian Art 1: Indus Valley to
1200, I look forward to examining how religious transmission through art found in Moenjodaro and
Taxila has shaped cultural systems. Moreover, Social History of Photography will show me how the
modern world interacts with pieces of photographic imagery, it’s influence on social structures and
politics and give me much needed insight into how Art can shape social history in the modern era. At
NYU, I look forward to exploring the realm of the museum and consumerism through Museums and the
Art Market.
Art for me can be found even in Math. With NYU’s flexibility I can pursue a minor in this subject to
explore mergers of the two. I feel inspired by M. C. Escher’s hyperbolic geometry and proportionality of
sculptures through equations of Polykleitos’s Canon or local textiles of rich cultural heritage using
mathematical precision for different weaves.
As a Photographer I’ll form my visual voice capturing the view over Chinatown from the Manhattan
Bridge or protesting for social equality as part of the CCI on inequality. I’ll bring joy playing Violin with 14
Strings, raise expectations in triple jump records as I explore cultural diversity at NYU.
At NYU, I’ll diversify my understanding of History of Art in communities, politics and even maths,
allowing me to navigate policy towards cultural conservation.
