1
Dr. Sneha Thapliyal
Chair of MPP

The Masters in Public Policy (MPP) programme

at the National Law School of India University,
Bangalore is designed with a focus on the
intersection of policy studies, law, and social
sciences. The programme is aimed to provide our
participants the relevant disciplinary backgrounds to
policy formulation, implementation, and analyses
using varied pedagogies

In addition to public policy, research methodology and law related courses, the
programme also covers introductory economics, statistics, political science, and sociology to
foster multidisciplinary perspectives in our participants. Over and above the rigorous
academic training, participants are exposed to fieldwork in the rural sector, and are required
to undertake projects for corporate clients and internships across the social sector. The
participants of our MPP batch of 2022-24 have diverse educational backgrounds (including
social sciences, law, humanities, natural sciences, and engineering) and over half of the batch
has prior work experience. They have actively engaged with various public policy domains
including public health, climate change, urban planning, technology, and education through
internships and projects. MPP 2022-24 batch is well-trained in research methods, equipped
with relevant knowledge across disciplines, and has had in-depth exposure to policies across
several domains. I am certain they will contribute effectively to the realisation of organisational
goals in the short term and to social goals in the long term.

We are very proud to present our batch of 2022-24.

About Us
National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, is a premier university

established in 1986 with a view to cater to the requirements of the legal profession,

research, and judiciary. The institution has been ranked as the top law institute in

the country for the last several years. However, realising the growing necessity of a

policy-driven change, which would interact with law, politics and people alike, the

university started the Master’s Programme in Public Policy (MPP) in 2014.

3
About MPP
The Master’s Programme in Public Policy (MPP) is a two-year residential

interdisciplinary programme with a thrust on interlinkages between law and policy.

The course is designed to train young aspirants to become policy practitioners,

capable of supporting inclusive and sustainable development. Students from

diverse backgrounds are trained in practices and analytical tools in public policy,

with a special focus on development, justice, inequality and progress, in the

regional, national and global context.

Industry Testimonials

Sudarshan Sen
Former Executive Director, Reserve Bank of India

I had the chance to engage with the students of Masters of Public Policy (MPP) from NLSIU, Bengaluru on
the issue of regulation of the banking sector. I was particularly impressed with their commitment to
research and critical thinking. They did some excellent background research, admirably grasped the
different facets of banking regulation and then subjected it to critical analysis. An added advantage these
students possess is an intersectional understanding of policy issues. Public Policy as a discipline is a much
required addition to mainstream academics as it provides a powerful perspective for real-life policy work. I
commend the faculty and students of NLSIU MPP for carrying this charge forward with sincerity and
dedication.

Sarthak Roy
Research Officer, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative

For a few years now, students from the MPP course at NLSIU have interned with CHRI 's respective teams.
As someone who is a part of the International Advocacy Team here at CHRI, we have benefited immensely
from the work rate, dedication and most importantly ingenuity of the work done by MPP interns. During our
advocacy with the UN Human Rights Council, a recent intern from MPP, provided us tremendous logistical
and research support. I hope to work with more students from the MPP course at NLSIU during my time
here at CHRI.

5
Industry Testimonials

Anuja Venkatachalam
Research Manager (Data) at the Innovations in Data and Experiments
for Action Initiative (IDEA Lab), J-PAL

The intern from MPP, NLSIU supported our Innovations in Data and Experiments for Action
initiative in developing policy guidelines to promote administrative data use by state
governments. The Master’s program in Public Policy at National Law School, Bangalore,
which brings together the nexus of law, policy and development, combined with his previous
internship experience in advocacy and development, made him the ideal candidate for the
position. During the internship at J-PAL SA, he worked with two state departments to observe
their monitoring and information systems, catalogue datasets and develop materials for
better data sharing and use in policy-making. His immense drive to learn and his ability to
learn fast put him at a great advantage in completing the internship successfully.

Paranjoy Guha Thakurta

Senior Journalist and Political Commentator

I guided and mentored students for a presentation on India's telecommunications sector and
they were exceptionally bright and talented. They quickly understood the complexities of the
sector and prepared excellent presentations on different issues, including the legal challenges
faced by this important industry. I am confident that they have a bright professional future
ahead of them.

The students of MPP from NLSIU interned at Haqdarshak for their client-led project.
Throughout the internship, they showed sincerity and accountability for their assigned work.
