Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the nature of bullying in classroom that
takes place in the context of a secondary school in Dhaka and to identify the
types of bullying exists in their English language classrooms as well as the
implication that are inflicted upon the learners. This study aims to investigate
the different types of bullying and classroom management strategies that take
place in our secondary Bangla medium schools. Thus, this work will try to bring
out the current consequences of bullying on the secondary level learners by
analyzing the observational data and interviews. Firstly, it provides a brief
outline about the thesis, including the background of the topic, the specific
research problem, and associated research questions and objectives of the
study along with the significance of the research. Next, explores the relevant
materials from extensive bodies of literature on the historical development of
bullying and thus it helps to determine the significance of investigating the
practice of bullying in the present practice of teaching and learning. After that, it
outlines the research methods for this study by combining both qualitative and
quantitative techniques. Again, it provides a detail account of the research
findings based on the students’ survey, teacher’s interviews and observational
data. Finally, it explores the research questions by discussing them from the
theme based perspectives and then reports on the brief summary of this study
with conclusive remarks and recommendations.

Introduction
Bulling is a widely occurred phenomenon among Universities students which
has an immense impact on psychological and social development having far-
reaching consequences in life. Bullying is a form of violence. It involves a real or
perceived imbalance of power, with the more powerful child or group attacking
those who are less powerful (Olweus, 1999). According to some reports,
bullying occurs in one out of five students. It is one of the rising problems in
Asia, including Bangladesh. Research has revealed that students around the
world regularly report witnessing and experiencing bullying (Eslea et al, 2003).
Bullying and abuse have become a normal daily practice in our country, leaving
hundreds of people every day to fight depression and the urge to quit their life.
Children are dropping out of Universities and girls are committing suicide due
to bullying at university. It may also play a crucial role behind poor academic
performance. Despite its grave consequences, it is seen as common practice of
schooling, and not addressed duly. As a sensitive issue, teachers, students and
parents often shy away from talking about it. Even if dealt with, punishment
and discipline within the classroom is the only means.

Research Methodology about
bullying at universities
In order to conduct this research, first it is necessary to define the term “bully”
and with detail work procedure according to the subject. I have studied the
published journals, articles of several researchers and finally decided to apply
the mixed method comprising both qualitative and quantitative data collection
and analysis in this regard. I have observed four secondary-level classes in a
Bangla medium school and written down the episodes that took place in the
classroom. To do the classroom observation, I have maintained a checklist
because using a checklist it becomes easy to note down the items that I want to
find out from the classroom activities. I have also analyzed the data of the
teacher’s interview (appendix A) through a qualitative analysis and the
students’ survey (Appendix B) with quantitative analysis.

Media factors and

students bullying
Honjo et al., (2011) identied two kinds of universites bullying. There is the
kind of university bullying as the place where no digital verbal exchange
mediaare used (conventional kind of school bullying), as properly as the
kind of university bullying where digital verbal exchange media (such as
cell phone phones, quick messaging, emails, blogs, SNS, and BBS) are used
amongst students in bullying (new kind of universities bullying), and the
authors re ect on consideration on universities bullying the use of digital
verbal exchange media (such as cell phones, SMS, emails, blogs, SNS, and BBS)
and createa framework whose intention is to assist teachers discover whether
or not universities bullying is taking place amongst students.A survey in Japan
(2009) reports that, SNS sites were used in about 78.4% of bullying incidents
while BBS sites were used in about 8.5% of them.
