Chain Tension Bleeding Procedure

When initiating bleed: Ensure the hydraulics are not running on unit for this will cause more pressure to
try and over-come while compressing cylinders.

1. Back off all mechanical stops to a point where the contact point is flush or inset with the
mechanical stop plate.
2. Brake the 4 supply lines going directly into the tension cylinders, no more than a half turn is
required at the beginning of the step.
3. Using a prying device positioned in the middle of both sets of cylinders, usually will be on a
gripper block or carrier that is positioned on the underside of the idler sprocket, force all
cylinders to top of their stroke, at this time air should exhausted out of the loosened fittings.
4. Visually check that all cylinders are “bottomed out” which means that the idler shaft is touching
the top of the mechanical stop plates on all 4 corners.
5. When cylinders are compressed all the way, engage hydraulics introducing only system
pressure. Ensure there is good communication with person engaging hydraulics in order to shut
down if system pressure exceeds force being applied to cylinders.
6. At this point air and hydraulic oil should be leaking from JIC fitting attached to cylinders, if this
does not occur back of collar, or manipulate hose until this does occur.
7. When solid fluid is RUNNING down from hoses (If fluid is pushing out in a solid stream from the
fitting, collar should be loosened, or return line should be cracked. This generally means there is
more pressure than is Required to perform a proper bleed) for approx. 30 sec and no air
bubbles are apparent in oil stream re tighten all fitting this should cause the cylinders to
extend.( ensure prying devise is not positioned in a way that it could potentially get wedged of
jammed against anything)
8. Remove prying devises from sprocket
9. Set chain tension pressure to 500psi and take measurement of cylinders, measure from the
bottom of the idler shaft to the bottom of the mechanical stop plate, if measurement exceed
1/8” bleed procedure should be re done.
10. When cylinders are equally spaced, set pressure to required pressure, 500psi is the default
setting, Tighten down mechanical stop bolt until it touches idler shaft and back off 1/8 turn or
until bolt is just touching idler shaft and no force is being applied.
11. Tighten locking nuts down ensuring no movement of the mechanical stop bolt.
