PROGRESS TEST 1 | Version C

Our favourite childhood possessions

Readers tell us about the things they loved most when they were children.

KAI
According to an article in the paper, the most popular toys nowadays are

video consoles and dolls. However, they aren’t the things that give my

kids most pleasure. For them, materials like an old shoe box or plastic lids

from milk cartons are more fun and can be used for making pretend

money, dolls’ houses, or anything else they can imagine. I remember being

exactly the same when I was growing up, and one of my favourite

possessions was an old briefcase, which my dad had given me.

I recently read that briefcases are not very common anymore so if you

don’t know what a briefcase is, it’s a small rectangular case for carrying

documents. I don’t think my dad ever used his briefcase for that. In

fact, I don’t think he carried anything in it except for his lunch. However, I’d

always dreamt about having my own briefcase so I was excited when

he gave it to me. It was made of leather, and it was a bit old and damaged.

I used to imagine that I was a secret agent, like James Bond, and the

briefcase contained all my secret agent’s devices. The fact I could lock it up

made it even more special to me. I’ll never forget that briefcase!

KIMBERLY
Like most of my friends, I had all the typical girls’ toys – dolls, a pretend

kitchen, and a make-up set – but they weren’t for me. I used to play

with them for a few days before losing interest. Then, one day, on a trip to

my grandmother’s house, I was given a box of old toy cars. She’d

found them when she was tidying up one of her bedrooms. She hadn’t

planned to give them to me because she thought they were for boys.

However, she didn’t have anything else for me to play with.

Apparently, they’d belonged to my father when he was growing up.

Although they were probably 30 years old, most of them were in good

condition. A lot of toys are plastic nowadays, but those ones were

metal. I think that’s why they’d lasted so long. I spent hours inventing stories

with them, usually ending with crazy car chases. I’ve still got that box

under my bed and I’m looking forward to giving it to my son. He’s too young

at the moment, but I know he’ll enjoy them as much as I did.

How to become more confident

By Phillip Drew

1
I’ve been giving workshops and presentations about how to become more

confident for the last five years. I always start by telling people, ‘I used

to be the least confident person in the world,’ which surprises them because

that’s not how I appear. However, the truth is that I used to struggle

with social situations, thinking something bad would happen. I’m going to tell

you how I became more confident and how you can, too.

2
Firstly, when I was growing up, I was always comparing myself to others.

I worried about my appearance and thought other kids had nicer

clothes. I tried to copy what they were wearing, but I never felt comfortable.

After a while, I realised that copying them was making me unhappy.

That’s why my advice is to not copy others, whether it’s wearing the same

clothes, having the same hobbies or doing the same jobs. You need to

tell yourself, ‘I don’t want to be like anyone else, I just want to be me.’

3
The problem with trying to ‘be me’ is that sometimes you don’t know

who you are. If you care too much about other’s opinions, you don’t always

realise what’s important to you. That’s why I’d suggest making a list

of the things that mean a lot to you. I don’t mean lists of possessions, but

B1+
PROGRESS TEST 1 | Version C

behaviour, such as, ‘I think it’s important to be kind and honest.’

By doing that, you will get to know yourself better and understand what

behaviour you’re most comfortable with.

4
Another reason you might not feel confident is if you’re afraid of not

achieving your goals. I used to put off doing difficult tasks because I

was worried about making mistakes. One day, I realised that if I didn’t face

my fear, I’d never become more confident. I’m not saying it’s easy, but

you need to set yourself goals and stick to them. Tell yourself, ‘I’m not going

to give up and it’s going to make me more confident in future.’

5
The wonderful thing about becoming more confident is that you’ll feel better

about yourself in different ways. You’ll have healthier relationships,

you’ll know yourself better and you’ll learn to do things that you thought were

impossible. You’ll still get nervous from time to time, but it won’t stop

you from achieving your goals. So just tell yourself, ‘I’m ready to do this. I’m

going to become more confident and take control of my life.’
