the questions in the ANSWER BOOK.

2. Start EACH question on a NEW page in the ANSWER BOOK.

3. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering

system used in this question paper.

4. Leave ONE line between two sub questions, for example

between QUESTION 2.1 and QUESTION 2.2.

5. You may use a non-programmable calculator.

6. You may use appropriate mathematical instruments.

7. You are advised to use the attached DATA SHEETS.

8. Show ALL formulae and substitutions in ALL calculations.

9. Round off your final numerical answers to a minimum of TWO

decimal places.

10. Give brief motivations, discussions et cetera where required.

11. Write neatly and legibly.

2
QUESTION 1

Four options are provided as possible answers to the following questions. Each
question has only ONE correct answer. Choose the answer and write only the
letter (A–D) next to the question number (1.1–1.5) in the ANSWER BOOK, for
example 1.6 E.

1.1 Which one of the following statements CORRECTLY describes a

physical change?
A The number of molecules is conserved but the mass and atoms
are not.

B Mass, number of atoms and molecules are conserved.

C Mass and atoms are conserved but the number of molecules is

not.

D Mass only is conserved but the number of atoms and molecules

is not. (2)

1.2 Relative atomic mass is defined as…..

A The mass of a particle on a scale where an atom has a mass

relative to that of carbon-12

B The mass of an atom where an atom has a mass relative to that

of carbon-12

C The mass of a particle on a scale where an atom of carbon-12

has a mass of 12

D The mass of an atom measured relative to that of carbon. (2)

1.3 Study the equation below:

2H2(g) + O2(g) → 2H2O(g).

Which ONE of the statements below is CORRECT?

A 4 g of hydrogen gas react with 16 g of oxygen gas to form 18 g of

water vapour.

B 2 molecules of hydrogen gas react with 1 atom of oxygen gas to

form 2 atoms of water vapour.

C 4 atoms of hydrogen gas react with 2 molecules of oxygen gas to

form 2 moles of water vapour.

3
D 2 moles of hydrogen gas react with 1 mole of oxygen gas to form
2 moles of water vapour. (2)

1.4 Consider the following incomplete equation for a chemical reaction:

Zn(s) + 2HCl (aq) → ______ + _______

Which ONE of the following correctly completes the above equation?

A ZnCl + H2O

B ZnCl + H2

C ZnCl2 + H2

D ZCl2 + H (2)

1.5 2 moles of hydrogen gas at STP occupy a volume of …

A 11,2 dm3.

B 44,8 dm3.

C 2 dm3.

D 22,4 dm3 (2)

QUESTION 2

2.1 Grade 10 learners carry out the following two experiments to demonstrate
the deference between a physical change and a chemical change.

EXPERIMENT 1: Iron fillings are mixed with powdered calcium carbonate.

EXPERIMENT 2: Iron fillings are burnt with sulphur.

2.1.1 Define the term chemical change. (2)

2.1.2 Which one of the EXPERIMENTS 1 or 2 is an example of a

chemical change? Give a reason for the answer. (2)

2.1.3 Write down ONE method which can be used to separate the
mixture in EXPERIMENT 1. (1)

4
2.2 The word equations (A and B) and chemical equations (C and D)
are illustrated below.
A: Magnesium + oxygen Magnesium oxide

B: Sodium hydroxide + Sulphuric acid Sodium sulphate

+ water
C: Ca(OH)2 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) CaCl2 (aq) + 2H2O (l)

D: Fe (s) + S (s) FeS (s)

2.2.1 Write down the balanced chemical equations from the word
equations A and B (6)

2.2.2 write down the word equations from the chemical equations C
and D. (4)

2.2.3 What does the symbols (aq) and (l) mean in the chemical
equations C and D above? (1)

2.2.4 Calculate the molar mass of Ca(OH)2 in equation C. (2)

QUESTION 3

The reaction between magnesium and dilute hydrochloric acid is represented by

the balanced chemical equation below.

Mg(s) + 2HCℓ(aq) → MgCℓ2(aq) + H2(g)

During an experiment, 1,5 g of magnesium reacts with excess dilute hydrochloric

acid to produce hydrogen gas at STP.

3.1 Define the term one mole of a substance. (2)

3.2 Calculate:

3.2.1 The number of moles of magnesium that reacted. (3)

3.2.2 The number of moles of H2(g) formed. (2)

3.2.3 The volume (in dm3) of hydrogen gas produced at STP (3)

3.2.4 The mass (in gram) of MgCℓ2 produced. (3)
