 The key values that underpin Australia’s democracy, including freedom, equality, fairness and justice (ACHCK022)
 The roles and responsibilities of electors (e.g. enrolling to vote, being informed) and representatives (e.g. representing their

 The key features of the electoral process in Australia, such as compulsory voting, secret ballot, preferential voting

 How regulations and laws affect the lives of citizens (e.g. the different types of laws, how laws protect human rights)

a system government where the people are involved in the running of their country. The
idea of democracy came from Ancient Greece. The Ancient Greeks created a system
where all eligible men were allowed to attend meetings and vote on issues that were
important to them. The word democracy comes from two Greek words:

Demos = people Kratos = power or rule

Over time different leaders took over and democracy became less popular. After the
Middle Ages the idea of democracy slowly came back and today Australia is governed
by what is called a representative democracy. People in Australia who are eligible to
vote elect politicians who represent their interests in parliament.

4. Students are given Democratic or Undemocratic (worksheet) to complete in


pairs or groups. Come together as a class and discuss. Explain any terms the
students do not understand.

5. Devise a definition for democracy. Learn with actions.
