TRANSPORT

Transport is the movement of people, goods or animals from one place to another.

WATER TRANSPORT

This is the movement of people goods or animals over water using boats ships or other vessels from one
place to another

CHARACTERISTICS OF WATER TRANSPORT

a.Global reach; maritime transport facilitate international trade connecting ports around the world
making it possible for global commerce.

b.Seasonal and weather dependency; it can be affected by seasonal variations and weather conditions
such as ice in cold regions

c.Cost effectiveness; it is generally more economical for transporting large quantities over long distances

d.Energy efficiency; ships and barges are more fuel efficient reducing general fuel consumption in like
other modes of transportation

e.Environmental impact; water transport produces lower emissions per ton-mile leading to lower
emission and pollution to the environment

f.Safety; water transport is relatively safe with fewer incidences of accident and cargo damage unlike
various modes of transport like roads

e.Capacity; water transport can handle very large volumes of cargo including bulky goods over long
distances

ADVANTAGES OF WATER TRANSPORT

a.Water transport is suitable when transporting bulky goods over long distances

b.It is comparatively less expensive than the air and road transport

c.Eco-friendly; cargo and ships are known for their relatively lower carbon emissions as compared to
road like trucks

d.accessibility; water transport provides access to remote inland areas that may not be reachable by
roads and trains

e.The maintenance cost is less expensive as compared to other modes like air and road transport

f.Reliability; water transport is reowned for it’s reliability unlike roads which can be faced by traffic jams
DISADVANTAGES OF WATER TRANSPORT

a.Seasonal character; rivers cannot be operated for transport through out the year as water may freez
during the winter and level of water may go down during summer

b.Time consuming; water transport is very sluggish making it unsuitable for situations when speed is
crutial

c.Unsuitable for small business; water transport takes long to transport goods from different places
which may results into delays

d.The sea is unpredictable; Incase of storm the ship may capsise leading to loss or damage of cargo and
can lead to accidents

e.Not suitable for transporting perishable goods like flowers since boats and ships are slower hence
perishable goods maybe affected before reaching their destination

f.Navigation becomes difficult during the monsoons of wind, failure of monsoons results in to a fall in the
water level making navigation difficult in rivers

CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH AN ORGANIZATION MAY PREFER THE CHOICE OF WATER TRANSPORT

a.When the cargo is bulky; water transport is suitable for transporting bulky goods or raw materials
hence the organization may prefer water transport when goods are bulky

b.Global trade; it engages in the international trade and requires access to oversees market where water
transport provides cost effectiveness and reliable option

c.Cost efficiency; when shipping large quantities of goods over long distances it can be more cost
effective via water

d.Environmental condition; water transport emits fewer emissions hence the organization prioritizes
sustainability and wants to minimize its carbon footprint

e.Reduced congestion; when water transport is used, waterways can often bypass congested roads and
predictable direction routs

f.Stability for fragile cargo; when goods are fragile, of which they can damage easily, water transport
makes it easier because of it's stability hence being an option for transportation
TYPES OF WATER TRANSPORT

1.Roll on/Roll off ships

This ships mainly transport vehicles. All you need to do is to drive the vehicle to it’s place on the vehicle
and after the ship reaches it’s destination you simply drive the vehicle off. It’s very efficient and easy to
use when transporting vehicles overseas

2.CARGO SHIPS

Cargo ships comes in many sizes and can transport all kinds of freight effectively. Some cargo ships even
have specialized refrigerated areas to carry perishable items to their destination.

Cargo ships often have their own methods for loading freights
3. BULK CARRIES

Unlike cargo ships, you will not find Many cargo containers on bulk carries. Bulk carries transport items
such as coal, wood, chips, grains and metal ore. Instead of loading this items into a container Businesses
usually pour them right into the hold itself
4. BARGES

Businesses usually tow barges behind ships to provide more space for freight. These barges comes in
many sizes that works best for their specific type of cargo.

Cargo ships use barges on daily basis, so if you see an extra boat behind cargo ships it’s most likely a
barge
5. TANKER SHIPS

Tanker ships are mainly use to haul liquids and gases. Businesses in the oil industry often use this ships to
transport liquids securely.

These boats tends to vary in sizes and some of larger tankers are almost a quarter mile long. They
transport liquids and gases internationally
