1.0 INTRODUCTION

This report of my training and practical experience for the submission as part of the
requirements for the Professional Interview conducted by Institute of Engineers,
Malaysia. I have summarized in Appendix A in chronological order, an account of my
training and experience as an engineer since my officially graduated in November 2008.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (Civil) from the Universiti
Teknologi Mara, Shah Alam in November 2008 and had registered with the Board of
Engineers, Malaysia on 06th March 2009 with registration no. 59228A. Furthermore I also
was registered as a graduate member IEM. I commenced my engineering career at an
engineering consulting firm, Perunding ZAR Sdn. Bhd. as a Structure Engineer in 20 June
2008 till present.

2.0 TRAINING AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

2.1 Cadangan Membina Dan Menyiapkan Tempat Letak Kereta Awam, Seksyen 5, Shah
Alam, Selangor Darul Ehsan

JKR Selangor has appointed Perunding ZAR Sdn. Bhd. to carry out the analysis,design and
supervision for 5 storey car park, link bridge connected across the JKR road to border of
Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah and related infrastructure works. The work
stage is under tender stage. The scope is carry out analysis and design for substructure
and superstructure of 5 storey car park. Based on our geotechnical engineer Ir Harun,
the spun pile 600mm diameter with 1000kN selected for foundation. The issue
highlighted is changes of architectural during tender preparation which the parameter
beam to design up stand and parapet wall be design as part o beam. The changes of
ramp in and ramp out from building also effected the progress of work. During this
stage, I to consultant meeting and client meeting and all new or issue to be reported to
my associate director, Ir Fazidah Kamsari

2.2 Upgrading Bridge Parapet along North-South Expressway

a) Proposed Upgrading Works of Bridge Parapet Railing at KM431.5 (Bothbound),


Section C3, North-South Expressway.

b) Proposed Upgrading works Of Bridge Parapet Railing (Bothbound) at KM273.5,


Section N5, North-South Expressway.

c) Proposed Upgrading Works of Bridge Parapet Railing at KM414.1 (Bothbound),


Section C3, North-South Expressway.

Perunding ZAR Sdn Bhd has been appointed as consultant to undertake the detailed
structural investigation, enhancement works and supervision for this project.

The Consultancy Services to be rendered shall include all technical advice and skills for
the proposed detail design and supervision works for construction of bridge end
terminal along non-stop through traffic. The design shall be in compliance with the
relevant standard and approved by MHA.

The project comprises of the design and construction of upgrading parapet railings. The
work tasks associated with the scope of works for contractor is indicated as follows:

a) Dismantle the existing steel parapet railing for both bound and transport to
PLUS section as client requirement.

b) To conduct rebar scanning at selected point along bridge deck to confirm the
existing bridge deck reinforcement.

c) Prepare the working platform for both bound for hacking, reinforcement
installation, strengthening work and etc.

d) To strengthening the existing bridge deck to resist new concrete parapet as per
construction drawing.

e) To prepare and maintain a standard/ approved Traffic Management Plan (TMP)


during construction works/activities.

f) Other associates works

The works that I involved for this project is:

a) Involved in design of parapet in accordance to National Cooperation and


Highway Research Program (NCHRP) 350.

b) Prepare the taking off, Bills of Quantities cost estimation, tender document and
contract document for PLUS.

c) Involved for site supervision and site problem

d) Review method of statement, Traffic Management Plan, Work Program,


contactor claim and prepare Engineer's Certificate Payment (ECP)

Regarding for deck strengthening work, the method with drill the holes to slab
horizontally with 700mm long and filled with Hilti Hit RE 500. The existing kerb to
demolish and vertical reinforcement applied with Hilti Hit RE 500. For other method
applied by other consultant is hack the deck slab about 800mm long from edge slab and
introduce reinforcement before concreting work. Drilling work is choice for reduce the
hacking work and faster the work progress on site.

The issue to highlight is present of honeycomb to wall and no curing work done on site.
For the first issue, the contactors request to submit repair work. Basically the pressure
grout is applied for honeycomb issue. Based on our supervision, the curing work not
applied to parapet wall, so the contractor to suggest using spray curing with concrete
coring sample submitted for testing.

2.3 Proposed Upgrading of the New Emergency Median Opening along North-South
Expressway

Projek Lebuhraya Usahasama Berhad (PLUS Berhad), the concessionaire holder for the
major expressway, intended to upgrade their emergency median opening able to
withstand the impact as TL3-NCHRP Report 350. For this purposed, PLUS has appointed
Perunding ZAR Sdn. Bhd. to carry out the analysis and design the emergency median
opening for the along of North South Expressway.

Effective traffic barrier systems, end treatment, crash cushions, breakaway devices,
emergency median opening and other hardware must be used to achieve the highest
levels of highway safety. Many devised have been developed by the state agencies,

universities and private firm to address particular roadside safety concern. Evaluation of
the traffic barrier systems in Malaysia is based on the Guidelines on Design and Selection
of Longitudinal Traffic Safety barrier produced by the Road Engineering Association of
Malaysia (REAM) (REAM-GL 9/2006).

The REAM guidelines states that performance evaluation shall be based on the detailed
procedures by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, US Transportation
Research Board, National Research Council called the NCHRP Report 350 to ensure that
the devices are capable to withstand the impact as it is required to.

Currently in Malaysia, the longitudinal barriers i.e., the emergency median opening are
using design that can withstands Test Level 3 (TL3). The scopes of work for the project
are:

1. Mobilization all machineries and equipments, supply, fabricate, install, testing


and commissioning and hand over to PLUS as a client.

2. The EMO will be fabricating at factory and transport/supply to site for


installation process.

3. The mock-up sample shall be fabricated, assembled and tested at factory before
installation at site. PLUS and Consultant’s representative shall be present during
the mock-up.

4. The existing EMO/ railing need to dismantle inventoried and delivered to the
respective Section Office before installation of new EMO.

5. The traffic management plan (TMP) shall be prepared by contractor and


submitted to PLUS for application of work permit and lane closure. All TMP and
Equipment shall be approved by PLUS.

6. Installation on site shall include the checking and ensuring that the EMO system
is functioning and any exposed parts are adequately greased/oiled/covered or as
instructed by the Consultant. The EMO shall be tested and defect-rectified
before handing over to PLUS.

7. The Contractors are required to submit Method of Statements, Work


Programme, Warranty/Certificates, Test Result, Operation and Maintenance
Manual (O & M Manual) and as built drawing for the relevant project.

This project firstly install in Malaysia highway which 90 percent work involved in
fabrication yard with less of 5 minutes operation time to open the median for contra
flow. For the phase 1, 64 locations selected by PLUS for replacement of existing EMO or
new locations. Plus in the process for replace their existing EMO for achieved minimum
TL3.

Regarding to problems rise during design and construction work is fabrication on yard
where the uploading and loading work of EMO, the welding joints shows the crack.
Based on that, the EMO to re-welding and the dye-penetrate test to impose for every
EMO. The site condition also need to study and analysis especially guardrail work where
the site condition show the guardrail with 2 post and small width median, 2 post
guardrail with wide median and single post guardrail with small median. The existing of
EMO has opening length 32m, 48m and 52m where new EMO is 24m length. This
situation involved many guardrail works where 3 set details drawing for guardrail work
to produce follows to existing site condition. The PLUS was called their section and
region office to give the comments based on new EMO and the related comments to
apply by contractors. All equipments and parts should be considered easy for
maintenance and suitable for outside condition.

2.4 Proposed for Upgrading Works Storage Length (Ingress) at Sungai Perak RSA
(Northbound), Section N5, North- South Expressway.

Perunding ZAR has been appointed as consultant to undertake the detailed design and
supervision for this project. This project awarded to Perunding ZAR regarding 3 lane
widening project for Sg Perak Bridge. The ingress to the Sg. Perak Rest Area (North
Bound) currently consist of a single lane carriageway with a tapering length of 60m and
the length of parallel lane of only 120m. The rather limited length of parallel lane
followed by tight curve just before the petrol station creates a significant backlogging of
vehicles to the mainline carriageway particularly during festive seasons caused by

vehicles activity at the petrol station. The proposal is to increase the tapering length to
75m and the parallel lane length of 116m crating a total of 236m of parallel with the lane
width of 3.65m with 2.0m emergency lane. The upgrading of the parallel lane length and
also the taper length of the ingress may considerably increase the storage length at the
ingress thus may further reduce the vehicle congestion build up to the mainline
carriageway.

The works that I involved for this project is:

a) Involved in design of special wing wall for extension of culvert and review the
proposed RE wall by contractor

b) Prepare the taking off, Bills of Quantities cost estimation, tender document and
contract document for PLUS.

c) Involved for site supervision and site problem solving.

d) Review method of statement, Traffic Management Plan, Work Program,


contactor claim and prepare Engineer's Certificate Payment (ECP)

The issue rise from this project is relocation of fibre optic cable. This relocation effected
by widening of pavement work for storage length. Based on fibre optic service provider,
Time Engineering Sdn Bhd, relocation of cable will affect 3 km of cable replacement
which located within manhole to manhole. The estimated cost for 3km cable
replacement is RM 200,000. Provisional sum in contract is RM 80,000 where the cost for
relocation is too high and not acceptable by PLUS. Protection of cable is the solution of
for fibre optic issue regarding discussion with PLUS, Time Engineering Sdn Bhd and
Perunding ZAR Sdn Bhd.The solution is cover the fibre optic with 2 numbers of PVC pipe
100mm diameter and embedded with concrete grade 25. The second PVC pipe
requested as spare conduit for future requirement.

The second problem, when the lean concrete layer for base of parapet not provided by
contractor. The issue rise when consultant carried out for inspection work for concreting
work. To reduce time for contractor, we are proposed contractor to replace lean
concrete with applied plastic sheeting to base. Construction of RE wall in tender
documents is not provide the Remove and Replacement(R&R) for base where the Site
investigation not done by client. Regarding the SI conducted during construction works,
the foundation of RE wall to involved R&R for 300mm, 600mm and 900mm thickness.

Based on that issue, the Variation Order applied to client for approval and for contractor
proceeds with works.

2.5 Proposed Mixed Development on Lot 10934, Bandaraya Ipoh, Perak Darul Ridzuan

This project are divided to 3 phase of development where consist shop lot, apartment
and hotel. Perunding ZAR has been appointed as C & S consultant to undertake the
detailed design for infrastructure and structural works for all three phase development.
For the first phase, three block 3 and 4 storey shop lot are design. The analysis and
detailed design works for all stated structural elements are using 3-Dimensional
modeling analysis software (Esteem Plus) or other structural design spreadsheet and I
are responsible to design 2 block shop lot out of 3 block.

The issues rose when the developer sell the half unit block D for private hospital. Base
on that, requirements for hospital purpose to be considered in revised design. The main
structure and piling work to check. Based on analysis, no structure effected except for
lift compartment when the size change and based on that, the piling work to add for
new lift size.

2.6 Proposed Upgrading works Of Bridge Parapet Railing (Bothbound) at KM292.5, Section
C5, North-South Expressway

PLUS Expressways Berhad is upgrade of parapet railing of Sg Semenyih Bridge of the


North-South Expressways at KM 292.5 Section C5. The works mainly consist of upgrading
the outer parapet railing. Perunding Zar Sdn Bhd has been appointed as consultant to
undertake the detailed structural investigation, enhancement works and supervision for
this project.

The Consultancy Services to be rendered shall include all technical advice and skills for
the proposed detail design and supervision works for construction of bridge end

The scope of contractor works consists of:

1. To carry out traffic diversion during construction.

2. To dismantle the RHS parapet at the road edge, partially remove the concrete
base, construct a new concrete base and install normal RHS parapet to
withstand TL4 load requirement.

3. To realign existing guardrails.

4. To construct an end terminal for the steel parapet.

The works that I involved for this project is:

a) Design 50c steel parapet railing to suit the MHA requirements with minimum
TL4 traffic load and the kerb to be increased from 250mm to 400m height.

b) Prepare the taking off, Bills of Quantities cost estimation, tender document and
contract document for PLUS.

c) Involved for site supervision and site problem solving.

d) Review method of statement, Traffic Management Plan, Work Program,


contactor claim and prepare Engineer's Certificate Payment (ECP)

The issue to highlight for this project when the pull out test applied randomly to
embedded reinforcement with Hilti Hit RE 500 is failed compares to pull out test load
120kN. Following to this problem, the works to stop and the the problem to reviews.
Based on discussion with our director and Hilti representative, the embedded
reinforcement depth to increased from 120mm to 140mm. For this project, the utilities
scanning also to conduct for preparing the base of end terminal for every bound.

2.7 Cadangan Projek Jalan Air Kuning ke Kampung Gajah, Daerah Batang Padang,
Perak Darul Ridzuan

This project is alternative design for JKR Perak. Based on this project, I been introduced
for bridge design concept and bridge detailing works. This bridge is design with 20m
precast M beam and piling work for 400mm spun piles with 1200kN geotechnical
capacity. For this project, I also prepared the taking off and BQ with the cost estimation.

The Sam program used for design pre-stressed beam and other spreadsheet for others
structural elements. My supervisor is guided me for all related issues rise during design
work.

2.8 Cadangan Pembangunan 102 Unit Rumah Teres, Fasa 6,Seksyen 13, Shah Alam,
Selangor

Perunding ZAR has been appointed to analysis and designs 102 unit 2 storey terrace
house for two different types of houses with 1 unit of TNB sub-station. For this project,
the analysis and detailed design works for structural elements I using 3-Dimensional
modeling analysis software (Esteem Plus).The substructure for the terrace house is using
pad footing following to Makintosh Probe result. Our scope of work is for design and
provides technical support to developer supervision team. The consultant also is
required to attend site meeting and site inspection. For status, the construction is 95%
progress and expected to handover to client by June 2015.

Issue and problem rise for this project were the client request consultant to omit the
first floor column based on sample house comments. The adjacent column and beam
need to redesign. The footing details also to check because all footing works completed.
Based on analysis and design, the footing reinforcement and sizes is maintained as
original detail drawing. The second problem, when contractor used the superseded
beam detail drawing for 5 unit terrace house. Client is requested Perunding ZAR to come
up with the solutions. Based on that, three method of rectify works selected by using
steel plate, applied fibre layer to beam surface where the strength estimated
100N/mm2 and the lowest cost by increased beam size with additional reinforcement
and cement grout. The third option selected by client and consultant to supervise the
rectified works.

2.9 Army Camp Project

b) Cadangan Pembangunan Semula Kem Tentera Darat Di Bawah Program Army


Care Secara Reka Dan Bina Di Kem Miri,Sarawak.

Both project is categorized under design and build contract. The contractor is
invited by Ministry of Defense for submit tender proposal. For both project, the
re-development of army camp involved for office, warehouse, command centre,
quarters, dining hall and etc. I involved in design for a part of the structural work
for both camp. The problem or issue experience of the project is constraint of
tender time with all detail drawing must be submitted to our contractor. The
sub-structure and superstructure for listed building in tender is analysis and
detailed design works for structural elements using either 3-Dimensional
modeling analysis software (Esteem Plus) or other structural design spreadsheet.
Average of 25 building is listed by Ministry of Defense for each camp for re-
development. The detail drawings prepare and submitted to contractor for
taking off and cost estimation.

2.10 Cadangan Pembangunan Stesen Janakuasa Hidroelektrik Kecil 10MW Di Sungai


Brooke Di Bawah Program SREP.

Perunding ZAR has been appointed as C & S consultant to undertake the detailed design
for infrastructure, structural work and pipeline design. The main structural works is the
power house, weir, settling basin, Pencawang Pembahagi Utama(PPU) and staff
quarters. The scope of work undertaken is design for substructure and superstructure
for power house, quarters and PPU.The analysis and detailed design works for all stated
structural elements is using either 3-Dimensional modeling analysis software (Esteem
Plus) or other structural design spreadsheet .The pipeline work involved seven
kilometers length with pressure head 252m. Two vertical turbines with capacity 5MW
each applied for this project. We also involved in prepare tender document with Bill of
Quantities and cost estimation. I also involved in preparing taking off, BQ and detailed
drawing.

The major issue/problem rise when the horizontal turbine concept replaced with
vertical turbine. All power house concepts drawing for architectural and structural
totally superseded by client. The crane load replace from 15 tonne to 25 tonne which is

affected the structure. All turbines maintenance bay area are designed to capture new
loading based on information provided by appointed turbines supplier. The building
height and build up area also affected. The foundation for building is design as raft
footing and pad footing.

2.11 Cadangan Pembangunan Membina Sebuah Kompleks IPPP dan Penyelidikan Berpusat
Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur

Perunding ZAR has been appointed as C & S consultant to undertake the detailed design
for infrastructure and structural work by Jabatan Kerja Raya Malaysia. The main
structural works is 8 floor main building with one auditorium for 300 persons. The main
building consists of offices, lecture rooms and laboratories. Following to our
geotechnical engineer, Ir Zaifuddin, the 600mm diameter bore piles with 2000kN
geotechnical capacity with 33m depth selected for this project. The analysis and detailed
design works for structural elements using either 3-Dimensional modeling analysis
software (Esteem Plus) or other structural design spreadsheet. The construction period
is about two and half year.

During the process of design and construction, I am involved for discussion, technical
meeting, progress meeting and problem issues. The major issue during construction is
revised the liftcore dimension regarding lift size and brand approved by client. Following
to discussion with my supervisor, the piling point is added to cater bigger liftcore sizes.
The second problem when the auditorium roof slab area is not enough to cater air-cond
compressor unit. Based on discussion with architect and M & E consultant, the slab area
to be increased with introduce cantilever slab around the compressor area. The existing
column size and reinforcement checked based on new introduce 700mm cantilever slab
before proceed with construction of roof.

2.12 Proposed 30 storey DPMM building on Lot 57, Section 69, Kuala Lumpur

Perunding ZAR has been appointed as consultant to undertake the detailed design
including for infrastructure work and structural work with site supervision for 30 storey
towers consist of DPMM office, office tower, elevated car park, chiller plant and TNB

sub-station. This project, I designed for TNB substation and chiller plant. Both structures
are located on the top of basement of main tower. A lot of considerations have to tackle
especially for transfer load to main building and cable trenching cross at ground floor.
The designed is using Esteem Plus program.

3.0 CONCLUSION
My years of working experience both at office and site in various field of civil
engineering had enable me to understand and appreciate the problems. All these
experiences and knowledge have made me a competent engineer with enough
knowledge to handle related engineering projects professionally. An experienced
engineer shall not lose sight of the bigger picture in pursuing solutions to the challenges
and constraints that present itself. With humility, I submit myself to the committee for
admission as a member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia.
