First let me thank you for picking up a copy of CampusMag's August

Issue. Whether you just want to peruse a section or read through it,
know that the magazine has been designed with you, the student in

Thoughts and opinions on how to improve the magazine are always

Hair is an important part of everyone's everyday life and is a

particularly a quite integral part to everyones success. How you keep
and maintain it is what makes the phrase 'First Impressions last'
matter as where do other start looking at your from if not your hair.

On this months issue, we tackle some of the most important issues

Choosing hairstyles for ladies is a night mare in
choices. As they are simply endless possibilities &
combinations that can be tried out. Here are some
that are trending at the moment, are easy to maintain
and last long if well taken care of.
1. Box Braids: This is a protective style that is achieved
by parting the hairs into tiny sections and then
braiding the hair while infusing wefts of braiding hair.
Braiding hair is synthetic hair with a thicker texture
used to make braids appear longer and thicker. This
hairstyle can take from 4 to 8 hours to complete and
last for 3 months, at the longest 3
2. Sew-Ins : This is a durable, low-maintenance
hairstyle that can last up to three months with proper
care. This style is known as protective styles as it allows

women to style their hair without breaking or
damaging their natural hair from any heating tools.
This technique involves French braiding the natural
hair into a circular pattern and using needles to sew
the ends of the track into the braided hair. These
tracks come in the form of bundles or packs, which
are extended collections of hair held together by
wefts that vary in length and color.
3. Natural Hair: This is the state-of-being of all hair
without assistance from extensions or heated tools. It is
one of the most versatile patterns that can be worn in
endless ways. This often includes thick-textured hair
that results in many curl patterns. This style often
requires products due to natural hair being prone to
dryness and frizz. It is easily damaged due to humidity
and breakage. This damage is why many women
often turn to the protective styles listed above, as to
not ruin or damage their natural hair.
4. Goddess Braids : These give a tiara kind of look and
accentuate the forehead and eyes. It is much like a
large inverted cornrow. In this, the hair is not braided
completely, but a major portion of it is left flowing. This

hair would require synthetic hair as well.

haircut has run its course. Nowadays, there are
many latest hairstyles for men that can
specifically cater to any length and texture
without sacrificing masculinity. From professional
short haircuts, trendy fade hairstyles, dreadlocks,
buzzcuts to funky long hair, men can have it all.
Here are some to try out.
1. The High Top Fade : The classic high top
haircut is back in all its 90’s glory. Also known as
the box cut, the high top fade is a sharp and
structured style perfect for those who want
manageable but voluminous hair. The style
involves a fade down to the base of the neck,
with short sides and about 3 inches of hair on
top. The top section of the hair is cut into a
rectangular shape that gives the box fade its
name
2. Mid Fade with Dreadlocks
This fade usually creates an arc behind the ears
which helps the dreadlocks to stand out
regardless of whether your locs are short, long or
medium.
3. Fringe Undercut
To recreate a fringe undercut hairstyle, allow
your hair on the top section to fall on the
forehead and combine that with an undercut.

So first, you take the basic fade, then you add

So BROKE !
I
'm pretty sure that everyone's parents
(and even mine!) constantly drill into your
heads how lucky you are or how spoilt
you are compared to ‘their time’. You
know what? Your parents aren’t wrong.
They lived in a time and survived a
period where money was hard to come
by. So hard that some of them couldn’t
even afford high school education let
alone higher education, unlike you – and
that’s only the tip of the iceberg for them with
regards to the challenges that they’ve faced
in their lifetime.
While your whole future lies ahead of you from

there will be more challenges whether you like
it or not. Challenges beyond working on
assignments, sitting for final exams or pursuing
a higher education. Yup. We’re talking about
money matters.
Knowing that basically everyone your age
feels an intense pressure to keep up
appearances, both online and in real life, can
actually give you an edge when it comes to
learning about financial planning and how to
change your status from broke to ... well not
broke. This actually begs the question, why are
millennials broke?

Everything Is Expensive!
Here’s the truth: trying to manage your
finances in your 20’s is tough. Even the working
crowd who are in their 30’s will tell you the
same thing as it’s not something you stop
doing. Of course, looking at where you tend to
spend too much and saving for your future is
the smart thing to do – but it isn’t always a fun
thing to do. What if you’re
forced to spend a certain amount a month
whether or not you want to? We’re not talking
about luxuries like holidays and shopping
sprees. In general, the cost of living around the
world is on the rise.
Here in Kenya, the price of everyday items are
rising, including general food products and
even fuel. Furthermore, with the recent budget
announcement for 201 7, it was announced
that a GST (Goods and Services Tax) will be
implemented. If you don’t know what GST is, it’s
a broad-based consumption tax covering all
sectors of the economy. Yes, it will affect
Kenyan rich and poor, old and young,
employed or unemployed. Why do we need to
pay taxes like these? Well, that is so that the
government can finance socio-economic
development; which includes providing
infrastructure, education, welfare, healthcare,
national security etc. That and also to pay off
some pretty serious Chinese debt.
Millenials Are Spending Under Pressure
Loans and low incomes seem to hold a lot of
the blame for why millennials are so broke, but
there is also some weirdness when it comes to
how we spend our money. Most millennials feel
a weird pressure to keep up the appearance
that they aren’t actually broke and social
media is one major source of this pressure.
Social media has created a new set of rules. It
used to be that the style conscious might

to buy data daily, to pay for

on that random Tinder date,
to do quick impulsive online
shopping or go for that
retreat you saw in an online
ad. It is not so good for our
finances. Also being
exposed to more
opportunities in Campus
exposes us to people from
higher social classes and in
a bid to keep up, we end up
spending way more than we
actually have in a bid to
keep up appearances.
Instant Gratification
Millenials were enabled as
kids and didn’t learn responsibility or how to
fend for themselves so they make poor
decisions. Ultimately this generation has been
set up to fail more than our parent's generation
ever was. We have become more of a credit

discipline and attending financial literacy classes

Fiscal discipline
Have a budget and always stick to one! It’s the
most important tool to properly plan the ‘in’ and
‘out’ of your pocket. If you spend less than what
you earn, you’ll definitely end up with a surplus
that leads into savings and investments. You don’t
want to end up with a deficit that’ll require loans
or the tightening of your belt, do you? If you
continuously sit on deficit budgets, say for over a
decade, you’d be buying a one-way ticket to
financial hell.
Rain Rain, Go Away
Saving for rainy days is good but don’t forget that
there are a few types of rainy days. Two, in fact. A
‘predictable rainy day’ is when you know it will fall
e.g time to pay off a loan. There’s also an
‘unpredictable rainy day’ when you just don’t
know when or how bad it will be. Incidents such as
car accidents or illnesses (yours or any
one of your family members) fall under the

Maasai Markets in Nairobi are great places to shop for and see amazing handicrafts from
indeginous tribes around the coutry. The colorful Maasai markets mainly sell traditional wares
ranging from wooden sculptures, beaded necklaces, batik wall hangings, shoes, soap stone
carvings, sisal bags, kikois, textiles and a whole host of other exciting goods.
The Maasai Market has endured the test of time
and numerous re-locations by the Nairobi City
Council to become the premier market for African
artefacts and curios in Nairobi for the many tourists
who throng the city as the main start point in their
exploration of Kenya’s tourist destinations.
Maasai market borrows its name for the Maasai-
one of Kenya’s Tribes and one that has retained
its culture, traditions, identity and pride.
What I love about the market is how easy the Jua
Kali artisans are able to pick on trends and
provide an artistic alternative with the best
examples being Candle holders, ladies bags,
clutches, wall hangings, wallets, Sandals, clothing
and utensils such as bowls, table cloths, spoons
etc. This to me is what perfecting an art means.

Although many of their items which sometimes are
not given a good finishing touch, I have a
weakness for them because they are unique and
make one’s home or dressing seem very elegant.

Tips Fot Shopping at Maasai Market
1. Be very specific on quality and don’t just buy
an item from the first artisan who sells to you if the
finishing has not been well done. Chances are,
there is another who has perfected the item’s
quality – especially for items such as wall
hangings, ornaments or kitchenware.
2. Be the typical Kenyan, in other words, bargain
till you run him/her out of breath. Kenyans have
perfected the art of bargaining except in when
they go to 5 star hotels.
From experience, the markets at Kijabe Street and
the High court parking have the best rates as they
are perceived to be for Kenyans as opposed to
those in up-market venues like malls. It’s all about
perceptions and the venue cost. The items and
the traders are the same ones in all these markets.
Bargaining Tips
Once you have walked around, noted which
traders/stalls have the items you want. You can
now proceed with the actual buying. bargaing is
part of our culture as Kenyans so be ready to
engage in some back and forth. Here are some
tips that I have always used and which work like a
charm.
a). Ask how much the item is nonchalantly
b). Act shocked (chances are, the trader has
given you the cost with a very high mark up)
c). State matter of factly that you have half of that
amount
d). Insist that that’s the only amount you have and
you were actually looking for something else
e). If they are adamant on their rate, pretend to
be going to another trader, chances are, they will
call you as you leave.
f). Depending on how much time you have,
sometimes you will only add at most Ksh. 50 or Ksh.

These Jamaican style Jerk Chicken Wings are a great addition to your game night or
