ASTM phase one summary
ASTM phase one summary
The mixing temperature depends on the temperature at which the asphalt binder has a viscosity
of 170 +/- 20 cSt.
Compacting temperature when asphalt binder produces viscosity of 280 +/- 30 cSt.
For Cutback mix the percentage of solvent is to be determined from its viscosity at 60 C.
Also need to determine the viscosity of binder at 60 after loss of 50% solvent.
Mix Preparation
Compact Prep
Clean mould them either in boiling water, on the hot plate, or in an oven, to a temperature
between 93.3 and 148.9°C.
For compaction one needs to have 50 or 75 blows with the compaction hammer with a free fall
in 457.2.
Do the same on the opposite side.
Mixture Conditioning
of Hot Mix Asphalt
Three types of conditioning are described:
(1) mixture conditioning for volumetric mixture design; (for binder absorption)
(2) short-term conditioning for mixture mechanical property testing (both of which simulate the
precompaction phase of the construction process); and
(3) long-term conditioning for mixture mechanical property testing to simulate the aging that
occurs over the service life of a pavement.
Mix conditioning
The loose mix needs to be spread to an even thickness ranging between 25 and 50 mm.
Place the mixture and pan in a forced-draft oven for 2 h 5 min at a temperature equal to the
mixture’s compaction temperature 3°C. The compaction temperature range of a HMA mixture is
defined as the range of temperatures where the unaged binder has a kinematic viscosity of
280 30 mm2/s (approximately 0.28 0.03 Pa s)
Modifed binders do not follow equiviscosity. the mixing temperature should not
exceed 165°C and the compaction temperature should not be lower than 115°C. Also follow requirements.
Short-term conditioning
Place the mixture and pan in the conditioning oven for 4 h 5 min at a temperature of 135 3°C.
Stir the mixture every 60 5 min to maintain uniform conditioning
long-term conditioning
