ASTM Test for Moisture, void etc.

Preparation of Asphalt Mixtures by

Means of the Marshall
Temperature
The mixtures should be kept at room temperature (25 C) IN AN AIR BATH

 The mixing temperature depends on the temperature at which the asphalt binder has a viscosity
of 170 +/- 20 cSt.
 Compacting temperature when asphalt binder produces viscosity of 280 +/- 30 cSt.
 For Cutback mix the percentage of solvent is to be determined from its viscosity at 60 C.
 Also need to determine the viscosity of binder at 60 after loss of 50% solvent.

Mix Preparation

 The mix is to be 1200g.

 Mixing temperatures should not exceed 28 C fr bitumen and 14 C for Cutback.
 Need to cure cutback mixtures at 11 C till 50% solvent loss is obtained. Check every 15 min, then
every 10 min when close to finishing..

Compact Prep

 Clean mould them either in boiling water, on the hot plate, or in an oven, to a temperature
between 93.3 and 148.9°C.
 For compaction one needs to have 50 or 75 blows with the compaction hammer with a free fall
in 457.2.
 Do the same on the opposite side.

Mixture Conditioning
of Hot Mix Asphalt
Three types of conditioning are described:

 (1) mixture conditioning for volumetric mixture design; (for binder absorption)
 (2) short-term conditioning for mixture mechanical property testing (both of which simulate the
precompaction phase of the construction process); and
 (3) long-term conditioning for mixture mechanical property testing to simulate the aging that
 occurs over the service life of a pavement.

NOTE: Only applies to lab prepared loose mix.

Mix conditioning

The loose mix needs to be spread to an even thickness ranging between 25 and 50 mm.
Place the mixture and pan in a forced-draft oven for 2 h 5 min at a temperature equal to the
mixture’s compaction temperature 3°C. The compaction temperature range of a HMA mixture is
defined as the range of temperatures where the unaged binder has a kinematic viscosity of
280 30 mm2/s (approximately 0.28 0.03 Pa s)

Stir the mixture after 60 +/- 5 min

Modifed binders do not follow equiviscosity. the mixing temperature should not
exceed 165°C and the compaction temperature should not be lower than 115°C. Also follow requirements.

Short-term conditioning

Place the mixture and pan in the conditioning oven for 4 h 5 min at a temperature of 135 3°C.
Stir the mixture every 60 5 min to maintain uniform conditioning

long-term conditioning

First the procedure for preparing compacted specimen need to be followed.

1. With Superpave gyratory compactor- T- 312

2. Rolling wheel compactor PP3

The compacted specimens need to be cooled for 16 +/-1 hr at room temperature

Place the compacted test specimens in the

conditioning oven for 120 0.5 h at a temperature of 85 3°C.
7.3.5. After 120 0.5 h, turn the oven off; open the doors, and allow the test specimen to cool to room
temperature. Do not touch or remove the specimen until it has cooled to room temperature. For 16 +/-1 hr.
