The human brain is the most intricate organ in the body.

It gives rise to all of our ideas,

deeds, memories, emotions, and worldly experiences. Weighing about 1.4 kg, this jelly-like
mass of tissue is home to an astounding 100 billion neurons, or nerve cells.

It is astounding how intricately connected these cells are to one another. Through
microscopic structures known as synapses, a single neuron can communicate with dozens
or even tens of thousands of other neurons. Every second of our lives, a million new
connections are made in our brains. No two brains are alike, and the strength and pattern of
connections vary widely.

Memories are preserved, habits are formed, and personalities are sculpted in these shifting
connections because they reinforce specific patterns of brain activity.
