There is no requirement for highway authorities to place a keep left bollard on a traffic island and
designers must consider whether or not a bollard is necessary on a site by site basis.
The direct illumination of keep left bollards which do not carry a traffic sign is discretionary. The
use of the keep left sign on the bollard requires it to be illuminated if located in an area which is lit
by street lighting. TfL has DfT approval for the use of retro-reflective keep left bollards as an
alternative to illuminated bollards sited on traffic islands in the following circumstances:
Mounted on a central island or reservation for a zebra crossing with two Belisha Beacons
Mounted on a traffic island and facing the same direction as traffic signals

Notes:
Bollards with plain faces are not constrained by TSRGD and there is no requirement for them to be
directly illuminated.
Any changes to the A13 DBFO as a result of this Design Best Practice Note must be secured
through negotiation with the DBFO Concession Company, which may result in additional cost to
TfL. The TfL DBFO Manager will advise on the process. Contact: Paul Sanders on 81264.
