The Three Square Numbers and the Right Triangle

By: MARIA VICTORIA V. TIQUIS

Head Teacher II – Mathematics
San Jose Integrated High School, DepEd Division of San Pablo City, Region IV A CALABARZON

One day, Telay, Isay and Peipei visited their coconut farm in San
Pablo City. They wanted to taste fresh buko juice after a long travel
from their house, and also to make a buko salad. However, they have
a problem of getting the buko fruits from the coconut tree. So, they
called the farmer to help them.
They, asked the farmer to use the 10 feet long ladder and
placed its one end on the ground 6 feet from the coconut tree in order
to reach exactly the first buko fruit. Suddenly, Peipei who is very
observant noticed that a right triangle was formed. SCAN ME
“Sisters, looked I noticed that a right triangle was formed when
the ladder was put 6 feet from the coconut tree in order to reach the first buko fruit. The
6 feet is the distance that became the shortest leg of the triangle and the length of the
ladder became the longest side which is 10 feet. But I don’t know the height of the first
buko fruit from the ground. “
“It is easy son.” Mother said “I have a story about the ‘Three Square Numbers and
The Right Triangle’. Once upon a time there was a Great Man who was called ‘The True
Mathematician’. He was Pythagoras who live in ancient Greece 2500 years ago. A
Pythagorean Theorem was named for him because he learned the relationship of the
square numbers and a right triangle during his studies in Egypt, by making a model
assuming the areas of the floor plan of each 3 Pyramids with the measure on each side:

3,4;5 units. By super imposition, he discovered that the 3 squares formed a right
triangle and found out that the sum of the areas of the 2 triangles is equal to the area of
the biggest square:

32 + 42 = 52

9 + 16 = 25

25 =25

Thus, we have now the formula: a2 + b2 = c2, where the a, b; c are the sides of
the right triangle, a and b are called the two legs while the longest side c is called
hypotenuse which came from the Greek word means to stretch”.
“Thank you, Mother, now I understand, that Pythagorean Theorem can be used
in solving problems involving right triangle. Therefore, I can say that the height in feet of
the first buko fruit from the ground is 8 feet because 62 + 82 = 102, in short 36 + 64 = 100.
That’s the wonder of 3 squares and a right triangle!”, Peipei realized.
“Wow! brother, you’re very good. “Telay said “How nice to learn math concept in
real- life situation.”
“Yes! Math is in Culture and Culture is in Math, as mother has always said!” Isay
shouted, “What a nice story! Let’s go and have some fun!”
