MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY

PCC ME 602
BTECH, 6TH SEM
ASSIGNMENT

1. Draw a neat sketch of a single point cutting tool indicating its complete geometry on it.
2. Derive an expression to show the relationship between chip thickness ratio, shear angle and top rake angle.
3. How is Tool life affected by tool geometry?
4. A mild steel bar of 50 mm dia. was orthogonally machined on a lathe. The following data were obtained:
Feed rate: 0.5 mm/rev, chip thickness: 1.2 mm, rotational speed of work: 100 rpm. Calculate: chip
thickness ratio, chip reduction ratio and length of chip removed per minute.
5. Why a coolant is used in grinding work?
6. What are the applications of Numerical control?
7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using NC machines?

DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS

ME 601
BTECH, 6TH SEM
ASSIGNMENT

1. What is a clutch? Discuss the various types of clutches giving at least on practical application for each.
2. How does the function of a brake differ from that of a clutch?
3. Write a short note on gear drives giving their merits and demerits.
4. Sketch neatly the working drawing of bevel gears in mesh.
5. The turning moment diagram for a multicylinder engine has been drawn to a scale of 1 mm= 1000N-m and
1 mm=6°. The areas above and below the mean turning moment line taken in order are 530, 330, 380, 470,
180, 360, 350 and 280 sq. mm.
For the engine, find the diameter of the flywheel. The mean rpm is 150 and the total fluctuation of speed
must not exceed 3.5% of the mean.
Determine a suitable cross-sectional area of the rim of the flywheel, assuming the total energy of the
flywheel to be 15/14 that of the rim. The peripheral velocity of the flywheel is 15m/s.
6. What are rolling contact bearings? Discuss their advantages over sliding contact bearings.
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LAB-V (DESIGN)
LAB REPORT
PCC ME 692

1. Design and draw cotter joint required to withstand a load of 45 kN, The cotter joint is made up of material having following
allowable stresses

Allowable stress in tension =55 MPa

Allowable shear stress = 40 MPa

Allowable Crushing stress = 70 MPa

2) Design a Knuckle joint to transmit a load of 50 kN, assume permissible stresses as 40 N/mm2 in 10 size 40 N/mm2
in shear and 80 N/mm2 in compression. Also draw neat dimensioned sketch of Knuckle joint showing all important
dimensions designed.
