SEQUENCES AND SERIES

Sequence- a function whose domain is the set of

positive integers or the set {1,2,3,4, ……..,n}.
- a list of numbers (separated by commas).

Series- represents the sum of the terms of a

sequence
- it is a sum of numbers (separated by “+” or “-”)

A. Arithmetic sequence- each term after the

first is obtained by adding a constant
(common difference (d)) to the preceding
term.
B. Geometric sequence - each term after the
first is obtained by multiplying the preceding
term by a constant (common ratio (r)).
C. Harmonic sequence- If {an} is an arithmetic
sequence, then the sequence with nth term
bn = 1/𝑎𝑛 is a harmonic sequence.
D. Fibonacci Sequence- The sequence {an}
defined by an = an-1 + an-2 for n ≥ 3, where a1
= a2 = 1, is called a Fibonacci sequence.
